
Women's Swim & Dive With Solid Day One at Fresno State Invitational

The Falcons are in fourth place out of six teams
FRESNO, Calif. – The Air Force Academy women's swimming and diving team opened its 2018-19 regular season by completing day one of the Fresno State Chick-fil-a Invite Friday evening, Oct. 5, at Fresno State's Aquatics Center.
After the first day of competition, and through 13 events, the Falcons are in fourth place out of a loaded field of six teams with a team score of 248. The nationally ranked California Golden Bears lead the event with a team score of 784, while the Falcons are ahead of Mountain West foe San Jose State (161) and the Pac-12's Washington State (233). Fellow MW competitors San Diego State (658) and host Fresno State (283) are second and third, respectively.
A trio of individual top 10 swimming finishes highlighted the full day of racing for the Falcons, beginning with junior Lydia Knutson who took tenth in the 50 free sprint with a time of 24.00. The veteran will look to continue to build her speed in the event in which she holds the Academy record in with a time of 22.65.
The other top 10 individual finishes were the Falcons' top placements of the day, as senior Esther Min took ninth in the 100 fly, clocking in with a 56.81, while sophomore Kylie Stronko also finished ninth, hers coming in the 100 back with a 57.76.
In the diving events, junior Eve Fowler had the highlights as she took second in both the 1-meter (248.40) and 3-meter (261.90). Her 3-meter score surpassed her top 3-meter dive in all of last season.
Air Force had solid finishes in the three relays that were held on the day, taking sixth in the 200 free, eighth in the 200 medley, as well as ninth and tenth in the final race of the evening, the 800 free relay.
Elsewhere, Air Force had point scorers in three other events. Senior Emma Strom claimed 15th in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.63. Later on in the 400 IM, Strom moved up two spots into 13th place with a 4:33.37. Finally, in the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Heidi Schellin earned a team point by taking 16th place with a 1:07.46.
The Falcons will resume action at day two of the Invitational tomorrow, Oct. 6, beginning at 11 a.m. MT. Seven events are on the docket to be swam.
