Air Force Falls to Colorado State

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Air Force volleyball team suffered its first three-set loss of the conference season this evening (Oct. 5), as it fell to Colorado State in Fort Collins. Facing the Rams for the 50th time in program history, the Falcons fell in straight 18-25, 14-25, 18-25 sets.

Senior Abigail Miksch led the Falcons with eight kills, while classmate Shanleigh Conlan registered 15 of the team's 25 assists. Sophomores Alex King and Kathleen Medill rounded out the Falcons' statistical leaders, as King accounted for 11 digs and Medill added three blocks (two solo, one assisted).

Senior Elizabeth Pennington registered the Falcons' first point, while a pair of CSU errors helped Air Force even the set at three. Medill registered a kill and a solo block to keep the Falcons within two at the 6-8 mark, but the Rams pushed their advantage to five (14-9) and forced Air Force into a timeout. Sophomore Cambria Galloway registered a kill on the first play out of the break, while Miksch tallied the Falcons' next three points to bring Air Force within four (13-17). Medill added another pair of points (block with Miksch, kill) and freshman Bailey Keith recorded her first conference kill, but CSU took the opening set 25-18.

The Rams scored the first four points of the second set and took a 6-2 advantage. Miksch and Keith added scores, but Colorado State doubled up the Falcons at the 12-6 mark. Miksch added a pair of kills, while Keith posted a kill and assisted with Medill on a block, but the Rams scored seven of the final nine points to take the set by a 25-14 margin.

The third set started close, with Galloway (one) and Medill (two) putting down kills that kept Air Force within one (4-5). Several errors by the Rams, as well as back-to-back kills from Pennington and Keith brought the Falcons back within one (11-12), but CSU scored four-straight points to push its lead to five (16-11). Air Force pulled within two behind a Pennington kill (14-16), a Galloway/Keith block (16-18) and a pair of scores from senior Lauren Heldt (17-19, 18-20), but the Rams scored the final five points for the 25-18 victory.

Air Force returns to the Academy next weekend for a pair of conference contests. The Falcons will host San Jose State on Thursday, Oct. 11, before welcoming Nevada to Cadet East Gym on Saturday, Oct. 13.
