USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Junior Analise Howard and sophomore Anna Salamone captured Mountain Pacific Sports Federation titles this evening (March 24), as the Air Force women's gymnastics team registered a season-high score of 194.975 to place third at the annual conference championship meet, which was held at the Academy's Cadet West Gym.
Howard broke the Academy's 17-year-old record on the balance beam, as she scored a career-best 9.925 to share the conference title. The junior, who became just the second Air Force gymnast to ever break the 9.9-mark on that event, is the fourth MPSF beam champion in program history. Salamone became the program's first-ever MPSF champion on the uneven bars, as she recorded the second-highest score of her career (9.875) to win the 36-gymnast event.
Freshmen Brooke Bruder and Tyler Davis both nabbed a pair of top-eight finishes in their first conference championship. The pair were part of a seven-way tie for fourth on the vault (9.800, career-bests for both), while Davis tied for fourth (9.850) and Bruder tied for eighth (personal-best 9.825) on the floor exercise. Senior Casey Bell joined the duo on the podium, as she posted a season-high of 9.850 to tie with Davis. Junior Mariana Murphy and freshman Cam Barber joined Howard on the top-eight of the balance beam, as they scored matching marks of 9.850 to be part of an eight-way tie for fifth (career-best for both).
The Falcons' 194.975 is a season-high by nearly a half-point and is the third-highest Air Force score of Doug Day's 12-year coaching tenure. The squad also accounted for season-high scores on the vault (48.850 – the third-highest score in Academy history) and balance beam (49.000), while equaling their season-high total of 48.975 on the floor exercise.
San Jose State scored a 195.975 to successfully defend its conference title, while UC Davis took second (195.200) and Air Force placed third (194.975). Sacramento State finished fourth with a score of 194.775, while Seattle Pacific (fifth, 194.300) and Alaska-Anchorage (sixth, 192.200) rounded out the field.
The Falcons are off from competition until Saturday, April 7, when they compete at the NCAA Regionals.
