USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force junior Jonah Urlaub won the Varsity all-around and the men's gymnastics team captured its ninth-straight USAG team title this evening (March 30), as the squad kicked off competition at the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals at the Academy.
Urlaub's 79.700 marked the third-straight year that a member of the Falcons' squad has earned the USAG Varsity title in the all-around. In his first all-around of the year, Urlaub was the top Air Force finisher on the vault (second, 14.400) and floor exercise (fourth tie, 13.800)
Senior Fletcher Braunton and freshman Scott McMurray tied for first on the pommel horse during the team finals with matching marks of 13.300, while freshmen Frankie Valentin (13.750) and Ethan Esval (13.600) posted a one-two finish on the still rings. Air Force also accounted for the night's top scores on the parallel bars and high bar, as senior Jonathon Fornoff won the parallel bars with a score of 13.900 and junior Lukas Texeira scored a 13.650 to win the high bar – and better the 42-gymnast field by 0.650 points.
The Falcons registered a 396.400 to win its ninth consecutive Varsity team title. With its highest total since team scoring moved into the ‘five-up, five-count' system, Air Force easily defeated William and Mary (second, 388.750), Navy (third, 388.700) and Springfield (fourth, 371.900) in the Varsity field. Arizona State scored a 393.350 to win the Club Division title, while Washington (370.700), SC United (336.500), Temple (154.750) and NorCal United (107.300) completed that division.
The Falcons return to Cadet West Gym tomorrow (March 31) for the individual event finals of the USAG Collegiate Nationals. The top eight finishers from each event (combined Divisions, with no more than two gymnasts per program) will compete for individual USAG titles, with action beginning at 2:00 p.m. (MT).
