DES MOINES, Iowa – The women's distance medley relay made an improvement to the Academy's all-time standings this afternoon (April 28), as 11 members of the Air Force track team wrapped up an impressive weekend of competition at the 109th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
The quartet of freshman Mahala Norris, classmate Aubrey Ridgeway, sophomore Swathi Samuel and senior Carina Gillespie capped their weekend on the Blue Oval by recording the third-fastest outdoor distance medley relay in program history (11:24.47) and finishing fifth in the 11-team event.
The men's distance medley relay also accounted for a fifth-place finish, as junior Andrew Tankersley, freshman Zachary Dicken, senior Zac Petrie and junior Jacob Bilvado combined for a time of 9:54.97. Dicken also competed on the Falcons' 4x400-meter relay that finished eighth with a time of 3:1722 (junior Sedacy Walden, senior Chip White, junior David Collins).
White, the only individual competitor during today's meet, clocked a 400-meter hurdles time of 51.84 to finish within the top-half of the overall field (11th).
The men finished eighth in the Hy-Vee Cup standings, which recognizes performances in five relay events (4x100-meter relay, 4x400-meter relay, 4x800-meter relay, sprint medley relay, distance medley). Finishing fourth in the 4x800, fifth in the DMR and eighth in the 4x400, the Falcons accounted for 10 points to tie for eighth with Kent State and finish within the top half of the relay field. The women finished 17th in their Hy-Vee Cup standings following their fifth-place mark in today's DMR.
The Falcons close out the regular season next Friday (May 4), when they host their annual Twilight Open at the Cadet Outdoor Track and Field Complex. The meet, which will be the squad's final tune-up before the championship season starts the following week, is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. (MT).
