
Falcons Continue Action at MW Championship Meet

CLOVIS, Calif. -- Highlighted by four scoring finishes in the men's pole vault and a runner-up finish in the women's high jump, the Air Force track and field team continued action at the 2018 Mountain West Outdoor Championships in Clovis, Calif., on Friday, May 11.
Air Force claimed four scoring finishes in the pole vault, including three of the top-four marks. Freshman Mitch Lipe matched his career-best clearance of 16'0¾" to finish second, while junior Sam Hinegardner posted the same clearance to finish third, based on attempts. Sophomore Chris Doerr finished fourth with a clearance of 15'9", while freshman Justin Harmon, who spent the previous two days competing in the decathlon, finished seventh with a height of 15'3".
Senior Andrew Milliron collected a fourth-place finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase after clocking a time of 9:03.76, while classmate Brooks Hardy posted a season-best clearance of 179'10" to earn the same placement in the hammer throw. Junior Garrett Coalson and senior Jackson Spalding accounted for a pair of scoring finishes in the shot put, as they finished sixth (54'1") and seventh (season-best 52'11½"), respectively.
After three days of competition, the men are currently in second with 63 points. Colorado State leads the way with 80.50 points, while Utah State is third with 41 points. Wyoming (34) and New Mexico (31.50) round out the top-five, while Boise State (10) and Fresno State (9) complete the men's field.
Senior Shelley Spires earned the first points for the women's team, as she cleared 5'10¾" to place second in the high jump.
The women are in 10th with Spires' eight points. Colorado State leads the field with 51 points, while Utah State and New Mexico are tied for second with 36 points, while Boise State (30) and Fresno State (28.50) round out the top-five and UNLV (26), San Jose State (25), Nevada (14.50), Wyoming (11), Air Force and San Diego State (7) complete the 11-team standings.
Several qualifying races were also contested today, with the Falcons advancing 11 men in seven events to the finals. Senior Robbie Anderson earned a pair of qualifying finishes on the day, as he earned an automatic bid in the 100-meter dash (10.60) and an at-large berth in the 200-meter dash (career-best 21.39). Anderson was one of two Falcons to qualify in the 100-meter dash, as junior Miguel Molas claimed an at-large bid in 100-meter event (wind-aided 10.72).
The Falcons captured three qualifying spots in the 400-meter dash and 110-meter hurdles. Junior Sedacy Walden (48.19) and senior Tyler Koss (48.37) won their respective qualifying heats of the 400-meter dash, while freshman Zachary Dicken earned an at-large time of 49.59. Junior Micah Fontaine won the qualifying round of the 110-meter hurdles (wind-aided 14.49), while senior Calvin Berstler (wind-aided 15.21) and Harmon (15.49) earned at-large times during a break from their pole vault competition.
Senior Zac Petrie earned an at-large finish in the 800-meter run (1:52.27) and sophomore Patrick Sullivan qualified in the 1500-meter run (3:56.28), while the 400-meter hurdles, which includes senior Chip White, will be contested only as a final tomorrow.
On the women's side, senior Carina Gillespie (4:36.95), freshman Mahala Norris and senior Giulianna Vessa (4:40.22) all qualified to the finals of the 1500-meter run.
The Falcons close out the 2018 Mountain West Championships tomorrow (May 12) during Championship Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Action begins at 2:00 p.m. (PT), with the women's javelin.
