
Falcons Place 33 on Academic All-Conference List

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Thirty-three members of the Air Force track and field team were named to the Mountain West Academic All-Conference Team for the spring semester, the conference office announced today (July 17). Highlighted by a school-leading 24 selections from the men's team, the track and field program accounted for nearly half of the Academy's 71 total academic all-conference selections.
Highlighting the track and field team's list of representatives were four-time academic all-conference honorees and 2018 graduates Robbie Anderson (3.45, political science), Tyler Berson (3.47, aeronautical engineering), Calvin Berstler (3.60, biochemistry), Andrew Johnston (3.17, management), Tyler Koss (3.49, management), Shelley Spires (3.47, behavioral science) and Chip White (3.37, management). Three other members of the Class of 2018 were also recognized by the league office, as classmate Luke Piper (3.35, management) claimed his third academic all-conference award, Andrew Milliron (3.15, geospatial science) earned his second and Nicole Hahn (3.34, behavioral science) picked up her first.
Juniors Andrea Abel (3.74, materials chemistry), Gordon Kowalkowski (3.34, aeronautical engineering) and Jaci Smith (3.34, astronautical engineering) received academic all-MW honors for the third-straight year, while Mickey Davey (3.51, electrical engineering), Noah Riley (3.70, political science), Preston Roche (3.95, biochemistry) and Andrew Tankersley (3.38, behavioral sciences) all earned their second award. In addition, classmates Shanna Burns (3.11, civil engineering) and Sam Hinegardner (3.18, systems engineering) captured their first academic all-conference distinction.
Five sophomores -- Chris Doerr (3.25, management), Logan Grizzle (3.15, management), Sierra Rodriguez (3.21, management), Swathi Samuel (3.83, operations research) and Marshall Wheeler (3.66, systems engineering) -- claimed their second academic all-MW award, while classmate Heidi Borgerding (3.08, economics) earned her first.
A total of eight freshmen claimed academic all-conference honors during the initial collegiate season, including Hunter Boyer (3.68, aeronautical engineering), Addison Brown (3.45, computer science), Colin Dwyer (3.49), Scott Johnson (3.71, operations research), Jordan Lesansee (3.57), Mitch Lipe (3.72, aeronautical engineering), Kathleen Medill (3.69, electrical engineering) and Alec Schrank (3.33).
A total of 1000 student-athletes were named to the Mountain West's academic all-conference team for the spring semester, which features the sports of baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's golf, softball, women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.00 or better and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
MOUNTAIN WEST SCHOLAR-ATHLETES
In addition, 18 Falcons were recognized with Mountain West Scholar-Athlete honors this afternoon by maintaining a GPA of 3.50 or higher during the 2017-18 academic year and making at least one appearance in a varsity competition. Abel, sophomore Jordan Armstrong (3.72, physics/applied mathematics), Berstler, Boyer, sophomore Lindsey Blanks (3.90, operations research), senior Katie Burnham (3.93, mathematics), Davey, Johnson, Lesansee, Lipe, Medill, Riley, Roche, Samuel, sophomore Katie Scheibner, junior Justin Weber (3.79, geospatial science), Wheeler and junior Lucy Zimmerman (3.90, physics) all received the league's highest academic honor for track and field, while Armstrong, Blanks, Boyer, Burnham, Davey, Johnson, Riley, Samuel Weber and Wheeler nabbed a second honor for cross country.
