THIS WEEK: The Falcons open the 2018 regular season slate at the James Madison Invitational, Aug. 24-26, in Harrisonburg, Va. Air Force revisits Virginia Tech for the season opener. In the Falcons' last match of last season, Tech topped Air Force, 2-0, in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA tournament. The Falcons will have their shot at redemption as they take on the Hokies on neutral turf at 4 p.m. ET. On Sunday, Air Force will take on the invitational hosts, James Madison, at 7 p.m. ET. The meeting marks the first contest between the teams.
UP NEXT: Air Force continues action on the road with a pair of matches against service academy rivals Navy, Aug. 31 in Annapolis, Md., and UMBC on Sept. 2 in Baltimore, Md. The meeting with Navy marks the 10th contest between the rivals; Air Force leads the series 4-3-3. UMBC and the Falcons will be meeting for the second time in program history with the Retrievers tallying the only win in the series.
WELCOME BACK: Air Force returns seven starters and 17 letter winners from the historic 2017 season. Among the returnees are a 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy semi-finalist and USCA first-team All-American, two players on the 2017 All-West Region first-team and three from the 2017 All-WAC team. The roster is highlighted by the following key returners.
THE NEW GUYS: Coach Hill announced the addition of Tyler Amerman to the Air Force coaching staff. Amerman will serve as the volunteer assistant coach and will lead Air Force's JV squad in the 2018 season. Amerman joins Air Force by way of Salt Lake Community College, in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he served as the assistant men's soccer coach. While assisting at the University of Charleston, Amerman helped Charleston to a 44-2-1 overall record in two years, including a 2015 NCAA Final Four Appearance and two runner's-up finishes.
Coach Hill also announced the addition of 16 players to the 2018-19 roster. The class of 2022 includes five Development Academy athletes and a multitude of state champions, club team champions and all-conference selections.
Jameson Barnard played for Real Colorado Development Academy where he was a U18 DA captain starting in all games played and a U17 DA captain with .980 starting percentage. JT D'Emidio played for the Texans Developmental Soccer Academy. Giuliano Daniel spent four years playing at the Crew SC Developmental Academy. Kainoa Likewise played for USL Charlotte Independence and Rapids Development Academy U-14, U-16, U-18 and U-19. Michael Neascu, who was a captain for the Alpharetta Ambush, helped lead his squad to a second-place finish in the Southern Premiere League. Lathan Spadafora is a five-time state champion and holds his high school's record for career goals. Tristan Trager played for U.S. Developmental Academy Strikers FC but proved his worth on the gridiron where earned three letters in football at San Clemente HS, breaking three program kicking records.
BAD TO THE BONE: Air Force senior team captain Tucker Bone is among those added to the watch list for the 2018 Missouri Athletic Club's (MAC) Hermann Trophy. Bone was a semifinalist for the 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy as he earned first-team All-American honors as a junior. It was Air Force's first first-team All-America honor since current associate head coach, Chris Foster, received the nod in 1988.
The Granite Bay, Calif. (Jesuit), native was also announced to the first-team of TopDrawerSoccer.com's Preseason Best XI selection. The publication composed an 11-man team of whom they believe to be the top players from all across NCAA DI men's soccer. This is Air Force soccer's first time adding a member to the first-team. TDS also named Bone as the No. 6 player in the nation to watch in their Top 100 significant players to watch list, announced this week.
Bone added had his name added to the preseason All-WAC team announced earlier this month; he is a two-time first-team All-WAC selection and a 2017 first-team All-West Region selection. He leads the teams with 16 career assists, 96 career shots, 57 career games played and 49 career starts.
PRESEASON WAC TALK: Seattle U is the preseason favorite to win the 2018 Western Athletic Conference men's soccer title in a vote of the league's 12 head coaches, who could not vote for their own team.
The Redhawks collected nine of 12 first-place votes and 119 total points to take the top spot after winning the 2017 WAC Tournament and advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament. UNLV was selected second with 105 points, just one tick ahead of defending regular season champion Air Force, who earned the remaining three first-place votes and 104 points overall.
Seattle U midfielder Sergio Rivas and defender Nathan Aune were selected as WAC Preseason Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year respectively in a vote of the league's 12 head coaches, who could not vote for their own players.
Rivas and Aune are joined on the Preseason All-WAC squad by teammates Anthony Ayala and Josh Adachi. UNLV has three players as forward Marco Gonzalez, midfielder Timo Mehlich and defender Adam Musovski were honored. Air Force had two selected as forwards Tucker Bone and Austin Dewing represented the Falcons. Grand Canyon midfielder Josh Drack and San José State defender Andy Rios rounded out the 11-member team.
The opening weekend schedule features two matches against nationally-ranked opponents and another that features an opponent receiving votes in the coaches' poll. San José State travels to top-ranked Stanford to open the season while Grand Canyon plays host to 12th-ranked Wisconsin on Friday night at GCU Stadium. On Sunday, UIW travels to California as the Bears open the season ranked just outside the Top 25.

They will begin their four year transition process to Division 1. This will make them ineligible to compete in post season tournaments (WAC and NCAA) until 2022-2023 season.
THE SEATTLE SEVEN: With 11 men's soccer teams eligible for the postseason in 2018, the WAC tournament field remains at seven teams. The tournament also features an extra rest day between the first round and semifinal round. The regular season champion and top seed will receive the only bye in the tournament, with the other teams beginning play on Wednesday, Nov. 7 in Seattle. Semifinals will be played on Friday, Nov. 9 with the championship game set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11.
PLAYING THE BEST: The WAC has 19 non-conference games against participants from the 2017 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament including rematches of all three games the WAC played in the national tournament last season. Air Force is among those with a rematch, facing Virginia Tech in a neutral-site match on opening night at James Madison. Seattle hosts its second-round opponent Akron on Sep. 7 and then takes on rival and first-round opponent Washington on Sep. 23. Opening night will also feature San José State traveling to defending national champion Stanford and Grand Canyon hosting Wisconsin.
