Aaron Uribe of Air Force men’s soccer notched the game-winning goal in the 109th minute
Harrisonburg, Va. - Sophomore forward Aaron Uribe notched a goal in the second overtime period to lift the Falcons (1-1) to a 1-0 win over James Madison (1-1), Sunday evening in the JMU Invitational finale. Air Force's Tucker Bone, who sent a brilliant ball into the box, was credited with the game-winning assist.
The Falcons dominated the stat sheet in the regulation periods, taking 13 shots to JMU's four in 90 minutes of action; seven of the shots were on frame. A JMU red card in the 98th minute yielded senior team captain Austin Dewing an opportunity for a penalty kick to put the game away, but he was unable to net the goal, eventually sending the teams into the second over time.
In the 108th minute of a physical match up, Bone sent a cross from the left end line where the Air Force had superior numbers in JMU's box. It was Uribe who met the ball with a quick touch to the right side of the goal, sealing the deal on the Falcons' first win this season.
Klint Parker led Air Force with four shots, three of which were on goal. The Falcons' stout defensive unit made up by James Sims, Nick Blessing and Zane Moxley played for all 109 minutes of action. Senior defender David Louthan anchored the Falcon defense in extra time, logging 98 minutes on the day. Andrea Seazzu added his fifth career shutout in Air Force's goal, making three saves against seven JMU shots.
"We got a little extra endurance training in overtime," said head coach Doug Hill. "It was good to see the guys grind through a tough and physical game, it was a well-deserved win."
"Just as good as our offense was, our defense was very strong," continued Hill. "I told the guys before the game started that if we keep up the no-goal defense, we were going to walk away with the win. Zane Moxley and David Louthan led the way on achieving that goal and we did what we set out to do. It was a quality win tonight."
Air Force continues action on the road with a pair of matches against service academy rivals Navy, Aug. 31 in Annapolis, Md., and UMBC on Sept. 2 in Baltimore, Md. The meeting with Navy marks the 10th contest between the rivals; Air Force leads the series 4-3-3. UMBC and the Falcons will be meeting for the second time in program history with the Retrievers tallying the only win in the series.
