An 87th minute goal was the difference maker
SAN JOSE, Calif. – In what was a defensive struggle, an 87th minute goal by San Jose State University was enough to down the Air Force Academy women's soccer team in Mountain West Action, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Spartan Soccer Field.
The match looked like it was headed for overtime, which would have been the fifth-straight OT match for the Falcons (1-3-4, 0-1-1 MW), but a shot from outside the box by the Spartans (3-4-2, 2-0-0 MW) hit the top of the crossbar, and bounced in for the game-winning goal.
SJSU controlled much of the offensive possession, as they out-shot the Falcons, 16-5, including a 4-2 advantage on net. The Spartans also had eight corner kicks, and the Falcons did not have one.
Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Hiddink finished with four saves on the afternoon, to up her league-leading save total to 54 on the season. Offensively, five different players combined for the five shots.
The match was slow out of the gates, as neither side registered a single shot until the 18th minute. Air Force themselves didn't get their first shot until the 24th minute, as both sides jockeyed for possession in the midfield. SJSU had a pair of corner kick opportunities in the 30th minute, but that was the last dangerous play as the match quietly went to half scoreless.
Out of the break, San Jose had a barrage of shots on frame over the first ten minutes, but Hiddink was able to fend them off and keep it scoreless. From there, neither side had a ton of momentum, as the match looked destined for extra time. The Spartans had other ideas, however, as in the 87 minute, they broke the ice with the decisive goal. Air Force kept the pressure on over the final three minutes, but could get the equalizer.
The Falcons return home next Friday, Sept. 28, as they play host to Mountain West foe the University of Nevada. Kickoff against the Wolfpack is set for 6 p.m.
