The Blue and Silver out-shot the Wolfpack by a 17-3 margin
USAFA, Colo. – Despite out-shooting the University of Nevada by a 17-3 margin, the Air Force Academy women's soccer team was narrowly defeated, 1-0, Friday evening, Sept. 28, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. The Air Force (1-4-4, 0-2-1 MW) defense was stout all night, as they allowed only two shots on frame, but the lone goal at the end of the first half ended up being the difference.
The Falcons spread out its 17 shots, six of which were on net, among nine players. Sophomore midfielder Emma Nelson led the way with four shots, including two on net, while senior forwards Kaitlyn Cook and Taylor Cobb each had three total shots.
Nevada's (4-5-2, 1-2-0 MW) freshman goalie, Kendal Stovall, made six saves in the shutout, while Air Force's senior netminder Jennifer Hiddink was not tested most of the night, only making the one stop.
The Falcons came out firing, getting a shot on net within the first minute of play, but it was dispatched easily by the Wolfpack keeper. Just five minutes later, AF drew a foul in the box leading to a penalty kick from Cook. The senior drilled a shot to the right, but the Nevada goalie guessed right and made the save to keep it scoreless.
From there, neither side had many chances, as Air Force held Nevada to just one shot on net over the first 43 minutes of the first half. Unfortunately, in the 43rd minute, Nevada had a shot outside the box that, aided by the wind, sailed just over the fingertips of Hiddink and into the corner of the net for a goal. Despite out-shooting Nevada in the first half, 7-3, the match went 1-0 into the half.
The second half was still dominated by the Air Force offense, as Nevada tried to hang on. The Falcons ripped 10 shots off, three on net, and the Wolfpack did not register a single one. Despite the offensive onslaught, Nevada held its line and was able to hold on for the 1-0 shutout win.
Air Force returns to the pitch Sunday, Sept. 30, when they host MW foe UNLV. Kickoff against the Rebels from Cadet Soccer Stadium is set for noon.
