The Falcons will host four of the top-seven teams in the NCAA at the Rocky Mountain Open on Jan. 12.
The 12th-ranked Air Force men's gymnastics team kicks off the 2019 season this weekend, when it hosts its annual Rocky Mountain Open on Saturday, Jan. 12. The Falcons will welcome five high-caliber collegiate teams, as well as athletes from SoCal United and the U.S. Olympic Training Center, to the Cadet West Gymnasium for the 6:00 p.m. (MT) meet.
MEET INFORMATION
The Rocky Mountain Open, which has been held at the Academy for the last 38 years, is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., inside the Cadet West Gymnasium. Tickets are $10 for adults ($5 for youth) and can be purchased at the entrance to the gym one hour before the meet. Cadets and participants of this Junior RMO event will receive free admission (Junior RMO athletes must be wearing their club's jacket or uniform). The meet will be streamed live on GoAirForceFalcons.com and a direct link is located on the team's schedule page.
LET'S MEET THE OPPONENTS
This is the first meet of the season for the collegiate squads, which include No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 4 Minnesota, No. 6 Ohio State, No. 7 Nebraska, No. 12 Air Force and No. 14 Arizona State. Oklahoma, preseason favorites and winners of the last four NCAA team championships, had claimed 18-straight RMO titles before missing last year's meet. Nebraska, the defending RMO champion, and Arizona State are also longtime participants, while Minnesota and Ohio State are relative newcomers to the Academy's annual Front Range meet. The overall lineup will also feature two-time Olympian and eight-time NCAA champion Sam Mikulak, World Team member Donnell Whittenburg and former Air Force standout Tim Wang, as several members of the U.S. Olympic Training Center team are scheduled to compete, along with several members of SoCal United.
ROUND AND ROUND, WE GO
Air Force will open the meet on the floor exercise and rotate in Olympic order. The rest of the lineup will begin on the following events – Oklahoma (pommel horse), Ohio State (still rings), Arizona State (vault), Nebraska (parallel bars), Minnesota (high bar) – with the individual athletes rotating with selected teams and competing at the beginning of each rotation.
FALCONS RANKED 12TH IN PRESEASON POLL
Air Force earned a No. 12 ranking in the annual Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Falcons are listed second amongst the service academies and fourth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
ON THE SIDELINES
Jeff Robinson is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Air Force men's gymnastics team. Robinson, who spent five seasons as an assistant coach with the Falcons' program prior to accepting the head coaching program in 2015, has been honored by USA Gymnastics seven times during his tenure (four times as the USAG Assistant Coach of the Year and three times as the USAG Head Coach of the Year). He is joined in the gym by a pair of second-year assists – Dave Mickelson and Levan Sisauri.
LEADING THE WAY
Jonah Urlaub will serve as the team captain for the 2019 season.
HOME SWEET HOME
Air Force will compete at the Academy three times in 2019. Following the Rocky Mountain Open on Jan. 12, the Falcons will welcome Army West Point (Mar. 2) and Washington (Mar. 23) to Cadet West Gym during the regular season.

Air Force welcomed eight freshmen to their roster for the 2019 season with the addition of Cason Couch, Colin Douglas, Noah Everett, Nick Handley, Collin Hickey, Nathan Reed, Alex Schechtman and Max Stergiades.
