The Falcons have five MW Conference wins, the most in program history
LOGAN, Utah – The Air Force Academy women's soccer team fended off the Utah State Aggies for a hard earned 1-0 win Friday afternoon, Oct. 25, at Bell Soccer Field. The Falcons (10-5-1, 5-4 MW) scored in the ninth minute, and held on for the tight victory.
The five wins in conference play are a new season-high for the Falcons in the Mountain West Conference era (since 1999). It is also the seventh shutout of the season for AF, the most since 2010. The Falcons also maintained their top-six standing in the conference as they look to make the MW Tournament for the second time in three seasons.
Air Force's goal came from freshman Emiley Benner, the first of her AF career. She was assisted by junior Alex Giggie. In net, junior Danielle Katz made five saves while facing 15 shots. There was also two clutch team saves.
As a team, Air Force was out-shot 17-12, including 7-5 on net. The Aggies (6-10-1, 1-7-1 MW) also had ten corners to Air Force's four.
The Falcons didn't need much time to get on the board, as on a corner kick in the ninth minute, the ball off the foot of Giggie found Benner on the backside of the goal, and she flicked it in for the goal to make it 1-0 early on. From there, shots were almost even, 6-5, but neither team could find pay dirt, keeping it a one goal game after the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, it was the Aggies who stayed on the offensive, as they doubled up Air Force in shots. Katz and the Falcons' defense were up to the challenge, though, as they made six saves as a whole to keep the goose egg on the board. In the end, AF held on for the narrow 1-0 win to keep a hold on a top six spot in the conference.
The Falcons now head up to Boise, Idaho to take on the Broncos of Boise State. Kickoff against the leaders in the conference is set for 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 27.
