FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Despite a match-high 17 kills from senior Denise Ssozi, the Air Force volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to 14th-ranked Colorado State this evening (Oct. 31) as it opened the second half of the conference season in Fort Collins. The Falcons suffered a 25-21 loss in the opening set, before falling 25-15 in the final two decisions.
Â
Ssozi, who accounted for over half of the Falcons' 33 kills, hit at a .432 clip – committing just one error on 37 swings. Junior Alex King tied for the match lead with 18 digs, while classmate Andi Ahlers added 10 digs and 26 assists for her 11th double-double of the season. Ahlers, as well as classmates Jordan Daniels and Cambria Galloway each accounted for a service ace, while fellow junior Mackenzie Robertson tallied a team-high two blocks (one solo, one assisted) to round out the Falcons' stat leaders.
Â
Galloway put the Falcons' on the board at the 1-1 mark, while back-to-back kills from sophomore Bailey Keith helped Air Force tie the set at four. After CSU took a three-point lead at 8-5, Air Force rattled off the next four points to take its first lead of the night (9-8). Sophomore Vittoria Juarez and Ssozi tallied kills during the run, while Ahlers teamed up for a block with freshman Taleah Cooper that forced Colorado State into an early timeout. Cooper kept the score tied at 10, while the Falcons forced the Rams into back-to-back errors to pull within one at the 13-12 mark. The Rams slowly began to pull away, tallying six of the next seven points to go up 19-13. Galloway stopped the run with a kill, while Keith (kill) and Daniels (ace) cut the Falcons' deficit to four (20-16). Ssozi added a kill and teamed up with Galloway for a block, but the Rams took the opening set by a 25-21 score.
Â
Ssozi accounted for the Falcons' first two points of the second set (1-0, 2-2), but Colorado State tallied nine of the next 10 points to take the 11-3 advantage. Ssozi scored three kills during a 4-1 run by the Falcons (8-14), but the Rams doubled Air Force at the 20-10 mark. The Falcons held CSU at 22 during a 3-0 run that included Robertson's solo block and a pair of points (kill, ace) from Galloway, but the Rams registered the final three points for the 25-15 win.
Â
Like the previous set, Ssozi put down the opening point, but the Rams jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead. Kills from Keith, Juarez and Ssozi pulled the Falcons within four (6-10), while Air Force stayed within that margin (9-13, 10-14) behind three kills from Ssozi. The senior added two more kills during a 4-2 run by the Falcons that included an ace from Ahlers and a kill from Keith (14-19).
