BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Sacred Heart scored three goals in the first period en route to a 7-1 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey Association game, Friday, Nov. 1, at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn.
Sacred Heart (3-3-1, 3-1-0 AHA) took the early lead on the rush as Ryan Steele scored from Vito Bavaro at 4:21 of the first period. The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead after forcing a turnover deep in the Air Force end at 8:06. Austin Magera created the turnover and found Braeden Tuck coming down the slot for his first career goal. In the final minute of the period, the Pioneers scored on the power play for a 3-0 lead. SHU moved the puck quickly from high to low and set up Bavaro on the back door for his fourth of the season with 32 seconds left in the period.
The Pioneers added three more in the second period. Early in the period, in a delayed penalty situation, Magera scored from Daniel Petrick on a rebound at the top of the crease. The Pioneers went up 5-0 at 11:41 on the power play as Jason Cotton scored from Matt Tugnutt and Tuck. With 1.5 seconds left in the period, Marc Johnstone tipped in a centering pass from Alex Bates for a 6-0 lead.
Air Force (0-7-0, 0-3-0 AHA) got on the board early in the third period. Brady Tomlak scored his second of the season as he cleaned up a rebound of Shawn Knowlton's shot at 3:05. Alex Mehnert also assisted on the play. The Pioneers answered in less than a minute at Tugnutt scored at 3:58 to make up the final score.
SHU outshot Air Force, 33-18, in the game. The Pioneers were 2-for-5 on the power play while the Falcons were 0-for-3. Josh Benson made 17 saves for the Pioneers. Zach LaRocque started in goal for the Falcons and made 16 saves in 32 minutes. Alex Schilling played the final 28 minutes and made 10 saves, while allowing one goal.
"That was a good, old-fashioned butt-kicking," head coach Frank Serratore said. "I'm not sure if we were flat or if they are just that good. Their forwards are dynamic, fast and skilled. We were never in it. They came out with a lot of energy and we didn't respond to it. As encouraging as the RIT series was, tonight we got dominated in every phase of the game."
The teams conclude the two-game league series on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 1:05 pm ET in Bridgeport, Conn.
