PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Air Force extended its unbeaten streak to five games with a 1-1 overtime tie with Robert Morris, in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Saturday, Nov. 23, at the Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Falcons picked up an additional point the conference standings when Max Harper scored in the 3-on-3 overtime period.
The game officially ended as a 1-1 overtime tie. Robert Morris earned one point in the AHA standings while Air Force picked up two tonight and took five of the six points in the series.
Robert Morris (7-5-1 overall, 7-2-1 AHA) took an early 1-0 lead at 2:45 of the opening period. Mike Coyne took a shot from a sharp angle at the goal line that deflected off of goalie Alex Schilling and into the net. After back-to-back penalties on the Colonials, Air Force had 1:57 of a 5-on-3 and had seven shots on goal, but could not tie the game. Air Force had a 13-2 shot advantage at that point. Â
Air Force (4-7-1 overall, 4-3-1 AHA) tied the game in the final four minutes of the third period. With under four minutes left in the third, Willie Reim took a shot from the left point that deflected off an RMU player and into the net to tie the game at 1-1 with 3:25 remaining. Blake Bride and Brady Tomlak assisted
After a scoreless 5-on-5 overtime, the Falcons earned the extra point in the second overtime. Matt Pulver carried the puck down the right wing and skated across the slot. His shot was saved, but Harper put back the rebound with 3:24 left in overtime.
Air Force outshot RMU, 41-24, in the game. Each team was 0-for-5 on the power play. Alex Schilling made 23 saves in the game and stopped 42 of 43 in the series against RMU. Colonial goalie Justin Kapelmeister made 40 saves.
"This was a heck-of-a good hockey game," head coach Frank Serratore said. "Our guys played so hard and so did the Colonials. We just didn't get any puck luck early in the game. Their goalie was really good. Our freshman line (Bride, Reim, Manning) played a great ground game. Best ground game from a line in quite a while for us. I really felt like something good was going to happen for them the way they were playing and it did to tie the game. Schilling was great for us again. I really like our team. They come to practice every day with a great attitude and they work so hard. We have steadily gotten better and this is going to be a fun team to watch."
The four-game road swing continues next week as the Falcons travel to Niagara for a two-game league series against the Purple Eagles, Nov. 29-30, in Niagara, N.Y.
