NIAGARA, N.Y. – Eric Cooley's goal with 53 seconds left in overtime lifted Niagara to a 4-3 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Friday, Nov. 29, at Dwyer Arena in Niagara, N.Y. The loss ended Air Force's five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1), the fourth longest in the nation.
Niagara (4-8-1, 4-4-1 AHA) scored first with a power-play goal midway through the first period. Noah Delmas found Ludwig Stenlund on the back door for a 1-0 lead at 7:06.
The Purple Eagles took a 2-0 lead when Chris Harpur scored on the power play just 34 seconds into the second period. Air Force (4-8-1, 4-4-1 AHA) got on the board late in the second period on Max Harper's fifth of the season. Trevor Stone won a puck on the wall and Harper cleaned up a Brady Tomlak shot at 16:56. However, Niagara answered just 52 seconds later as Brandon Stanley scored with a wrister from the high slot for a 3-1 NU lead. Tomlak extended his point-scoring streak to seven games.
Air Force scored twice in the final 10 minutes of third period to tie the game. Marshall Bowery cut the NU lead to 3-2 at 10:33 on the rush. Jake Levin gave the puck to Ty Pochipinski in the neutral to key a 2-on-1 rush. Pochipinski set up Bowery for his first goal of the season. Pochipinski collected his first point at the Academy with the assist. With 1:50 left in the third, the Falcons pulled the goalie and scored the first extra-attacker goal of the season. Zach Mirageas' shot from the left point was knocked down in front. Stone collected the loose puck at the hash marks and tied the game with 1:28 left in the third. Kieran Durgan also assisted on the play. The Falcons had several chances in the final minute of the game, but the teams headed to overtime.
In overtime, Air Force controlled play and had three shots that were all saved by Brian Wilson. With under a minute left. Noah Delmas took a shot that was redirected by Cooley for the game-winner.
Air Force outshot Niagara, 32-26, in the game. NU was 2-for-3 on the power play while AF was 0-for-3. Wilson made 29 saves for the Purple Eagles while Alex Schilling made 22 for the Falcons.
"We got behind early and chased the scoreboard all night," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We lost the special teams battle and they were better on faceoffs. This is very disappointing because we battled back to tie the game. Niagara was very opportunistic tonight."
The same two teams conclude the two-game league series on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 7:05 pm ET in Niagara, N.Y.
