Carter Ekberg scored his first career goal; Zach MIrageas scored in the 3-on-3 session
NIAGARA, N.Y. – Junior defenseman Zach Mirageas scored in the 3-on-3 overtime period as Air Force picked up two conference points with a 1-1 overtime tie against Niagara in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Saturday, Nov. 30, at Dwyer Arena, in Niagara, N.Y. The game officially ended as a 1-1 overtime tie. The Falcons took two points in the Niagara series and seven of the possible 12 on the four-game road swing.
In a scoreless first period, Air Force outshot Niagara, 14-4. Niagara (4-8-2, 4-4-2 AHA) struck first as Brandon Stanley scored on a rebound of his own shot at 13:29 of the second period. Air Force answered two minutes later on the power play. The power play began with Air Force winning the first three power-play faceoffs and getting three shots on goal in the first minute of the man advantage. Sophomore defenseman Carter Ekberg scored his first career goal at 15:25 with a shot from the top of the right circle. Freshmen Willie Reim and Brandon Koch assisted on the play that tied the game at 1-1.
Air Force had eight shots on goal in the third period, while NU had six, but neither team was able to break the tie. At the end of the third period, Air Force was called for a penalty that carried over into the 5-on-5 overtime period. After the Falcons killed the penalty, Niagara was called for too many men on the ice. Air Force had one shot on the power play, but the game officially ended as a 1-1 overtime tie.
In the 3-on-3 session, Falcon goalie Alex Schilling made two saves in the first two minutes. Mirageas then carried the puck into the zone down the right side and snapped a wrister short side as the Falcons collected the additional point. Alex Mehnert and Kieran Durgan assisted.
The Falcons outshot the Purple Eagles, 36-19, in the game. Schilling made 18 saves for the Falcons while Brian Wilson made 34 for the Purple Eagles. AF was 1-for-5 on the power play. The Falcons killed all three of NU's opportunities.
"Getting that extra point validated our effort tonight," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We needed that extra point for a lot of reasons. I thought we out-played them tonight. It was all about us. But when you don't score many goals, it makes it really tough. Alex Schilling played really well. There were some long stretches when he didn't see a shot and then, all of the sudden, he has to stop some quality chances."
Air Force (4-8-2, 4-4-2 AHA) returns home for a two-game AHA series, Dec. 6-7, against Holy Cross at the Cadet Ice Arena. Friday's opening faceoff is at 7:05 pm MT while Saturday's game starts at 5:05 pm MT.
