Falcons Win Nine Events in Home Finale

Air Force combined for 26 top-three marks in its final home meet of the indoor season.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – Highlighted by nine first-place finishes, four top collegiate marks and 26 top-three finishes, the Air Force track and field team closed out its home portion of the indoor season this evening (Feb. 15) with the Air Force Collegiate Open.
Senior Reece Pontious posted a personal-best time of 21.74 to win the 200-meter dash and lead the Falcons to a trio of top-three marks, while freshman Carter Kuehl matched his career-best of 7.10 to win the 60-meter dash and classmate Garrett Blenkush took first in the 800-meter dash behind a career-best time of 1:57.57.
Freshman Lashawn Taylor registered a career-best distance of 22'8½" to win the long jump and pace Air Force to a 1-2 finish in that event. Freshman Wyatt Murphy added a personal-best mark of 22'7¼" to finish second, as the pair separated themselves from the rest of the field by more than one foot.
Seniors Garrett Coalson and Victor Osinloye led the Falcons to a sweep of event titles from the throwing circle, as Coalson won the shot put with a season-best throw of 53'1¾" and Osinloye posted a career-best distance of 57'3" to win the weight throw by more than two feet.
In addition to the event titles, the Air Force registered the top collegiate finishes in four additional events.
Sophomore Mitch Lipe matched his career high of 16'6¾" to claim the top finish by a college athlete (third overall) in the pole vault, while classmate Terrell Davis finished first among collegiate runners – and second overall – in the 400-meter dash (49.69). Senior Josh Wojciechowski and junior Justin Weber earned the same placements (first collegiate, second overall) in the mile (4:25.23) and 3000-meter run (8:44.51), respectively.
Pontious, Murphy and Kuehl helped the Falcons to a 1-5 sweep in the 200-meter dash, as Murphy and Kuehl posted matching, career-best times of 22.47 to finish second and third, respectively (22.462 for Murphy, 22.466 for Kuehl). Blenkush was one of two Falcons to finish within the top three of the 800-meter run, as freshman AJ Kedge clocked a time of 2:00.11 to take third.
Freshman Sean Geither joined Davis among the top three of the 400-meter dash (50.36), while sophomore Colin Dwyer added a third-place time of 4:25.29 in the mile. Junior Anthony Davis and senior David Collins also accounted for top-three finishes, as Davis posted a mark of 45'0½" to take third in the triple jump and Collins earned the same finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.35)
On the women's side, Air Force earned event victories from sophomore Shay Stayton, freshman Grace Proesch and senior Kathryn Tomczak.
In her first 3000-meter race of the season, Stayton posted a time of 10:53.67 to win the event by eight seconds. Stayton paced the Falcons to a trio of top-three marks, as freshmen Sydney Hansen and Adrianna Wilder finished second (11:01.59) and third (11:02.64), respectively.
Proesch clocked a time of 59.59 to win her first 400-meter event of the season, as she and classmate Michelle Roca (career-best 1:00.39) guided the Falcons to a 1-2 finish in that event. Tomczak rounded out the Falcons' list of event winners, as she captured her fifth pole vault title in as many meets with a winning clearance of 13'11¼", and sophomore Addyson Smith earned third-place marks in both the shot put (38'9½") and weight throw (51'7¼").
The Falcons open the championship portion of the indoor season next week, when they travel to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day meet begins on Thursday, Feb. 21, at the ABQ Convention Center.
