Relays Impact Record Book at MW Championships

The women and men both recorded top-10 Academy times, while the men picked up a third-place finish.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Air Force women capped the first day of the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships with the fourth-fastest distance medley relay in Academy history this afternoon (Feb. 21) at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Both of the Falcons' DMR teams impacted the program's all-time standings this afternoon, as the men added the ninth-fastest time in program history.
The quartet of sophomore Mahala Norris, junior Kelsey Owens, freshman Brid O'Connell and senior Shanna Burns combined for an altitude-converted time of 11:44.86 (11:55.69 actual) to finish seventh in the race. The quartet marked the fourth time in five years that a distance medley relay squad has impacted the top-five of the Academy's all-time standings.
A strong anchor from junior Patrick Sullivan corralled the men's DMR to a third-place time of 9:54.83 – and the program's first all-conference honor of the 2019 championship meet. With senior Josh Wojciechowski, sophomore Terrell Davis and senior Preston Roche, the quartet combined for an altitude-adjusted time of 9:45.83 – the ninth-fastest time in program history.
Junior Connor Stevens and sophomore Tyler Gurchick opened competition in the heptathlon this afternoon, as the pair – making their first appearance in the conference's multi-event competition. After the first four events, Stevens is in seventh with 2388 points and Gurchiek is in eight with 2307 points.
Stevens collected sixth-place marks in the long jump (20'0¼") and shot put (35'8¾"), while tying for seventh in the high jump (5'7") and placing eighth in the 60-meter dash (7.55). Gurchiek earned a sixth-place mark of 5'9¼" in the high jump, while finishing seventh in the 60-meter dash (7.48) and eighth in both the long jump (18'11¾") and shot put (career-best 31'1¾").
The pair returns to the Albuquerque Convention Center tomorrow (Feb. 22) at 10:00 a.m. (MT), for the final three events of the heptathlon. The field events are slated to begin at 12:30 p.m., while the running events get underway one hour later.
