Falcons Drop Series Opener at SJSU

The game was tied in the bottom of the eighth inning
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Air Force Academy baseball team dropped the series opener to San Jose State University, 4-1, Friday evening, March 8, at Municipal Stadium. The contest was tied at one in the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Spartans scored three there to make the difference on the scoreboard.
The Falcons (6-4, 1-1 MW) had four hits on the day, including two for extra bases as senior Nic Ready and junior Ashton Easley both tallied doubles. Easley extended his hitting streak to 10 games to start the season. The lone RBI came from senior Drew Wiss on a run scoring fielder's choice.
While the Falcon offense struggled over the first five innings, the defense danced around some base traffic, as the Spartans (8-5, 2-2 MW) left 10 runners on over the first five innings. A solo run in the fourth from SJSU made it just 1-0 heading into the sixth inning.
Air Force finally tallied its first hit in the sixth, a double down the line from Ready. Eventually the bases became loaded for Wiss, and he drove one in on an RBI fielder's choice, tying the game at one into the middle of the sixth. Senior Jake Gilbert, who entered in the fourth, then tossed a 1-2-3 inning to send it to the seventh.
Following a scoreless seventh, the Spartans broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth with three runs to take a 4-1 lead into the final frame. Despite getting a man in scoring position, the Falcons could get no closer in the tough three run defeat.
Game two of the series against SJSU comes tomorrow, March 9. First pitch against the Spartans is set for 3 p.m. MT.
