The Falcons led 1-0 in the sixth before a long rain delay changed the tide
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Air Force Academy baseball team had game two of the weekend series against San Jose State slip away in a tough 3-2 decision Saturday evening, March 9, at Municipal Stadium. The Falcons led 1-0 in the sixth, when a long rain delay held the game up. Following the delay, SJSU got three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to steal away the victory.
Air Force (6-5, 1-2 MW) out-hit the Spartans (9-5, 3-2 MW), 8-5, on the evening. Leading the way on offense was senior Nic Ready, as he tallied a two hit day, including a double. Freshman Alexander Pup had an RBI single for the first run driven in of his young Air Force career.
The Falcons got a solid start on the mound from senior Matt Hargreaves, as he went the first five innings without allowing a run, only yielding three hits while striking out five. He was pulled after the rain delay, and sophomore Luke Chilcutt was the hard luck loser, as he surrendered the three runs, all unearned, while striking out two.
The first four innings flew by, before the Falcons broke the ice in the fifth on Pup's bloop RBI single to right field. Hargreaves kept the shutout in tact into the sixth inning, when the rain started to fall harder, bringing out the tarp.
Following an almost two and a half hour delay, action resumed in the bottom of the sixth, and SJSU took advantage of an AF error to score three unearned runs and jump ahead, 3-1. Air Force got a run back in the top of the eighth on an RBI ground out from senior Drew Wiss, but the Falcons could not complete the comeback in the heartbreaking one run loss.
The series finale against San Jose State comes tomorrow, March 10. First pitch against the Spartans is set for 1 p.m. MT.
