Rhoads finished first in the 800-meter run and paced the Falcons to three scoring finishes in that event.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Junior Michael Rhoads won the 800-meter run this evening (April 13), as the Air Force track and field team wrapped up competition at the Texas A&M Invitational under extremely windy conditions at E.B. Cushing Stadium in College Station. The men finished fourth in a field that included a pair of top-10 teams, while the women placed 10th.
In his first 800-meter race of the outdoor season, Rhoads clocked a time of 1:50.38 to win the 22-runner by more than one second – and pace the Falcons to a trio of scoring (top-eight) finishes. Senior Preston Roche earned a fifth-place finish after finishing in 1:56.49, while classmate Gordon Kowalkowski added an eighth-place time of 1:57.48.
The men also accounted for three scoring finishes in the 1500-meter run and earned multiple top-eight finishes in two other events. Sophomore Colin Dwyer placed fifth in the 1500-meter race behind a time of 4:00.38, while classmate Konrad Steck and senior Josh Wojciechowski finished seventh (4:01.89) and eighth (4:02.68), respectively. Freshman Lashawn Taylor registered a wind-aided mark of 45'5¼" (+4.7 m/s) to place fifth in the triple jump, while junior Anthony Davis took sixth behind a wind-aided distance of 44'10¾" (+5.8 m/s). Senior Sedacy Walden and sophomore Zachary Dicken scored for the Falcons in the 400-meter dash, as Walden finished fifth in 48.48 and Dicken added an eighth-place time of 50.01.
In addition to his fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash, Walden also helped the Falcons to top-five marks in both of the relay events. The senior helped classmate Miguel Molas, junior Terrell Bradford and senior Reece Pontious to a third-place finish (41.07) in the 4x100-meter relay – a placement that only trailed squads from the second- and ninth-ranked teams in the nation – and led off the 4x400-meter relay of Dicken, Rhoads and sophomore Luke Zuluaga that finished fifth in a time of 3:20.14.
Senior Logan Feasline, who paced the Falcons in the javelin throw last night and was one of just three field athletes to compete today, recorded the second-best finish of the night for the Air Force squad, as he recorded a throw of 169'7" to earn runner-up honors in the discus throw.
Bradford added a sixth-place, wind-aided time of 21.74 (+4.1 m/s) in the 200-meter dash, while seniors Micah Fontaine and David Collins accounted for seventh-place marks in both hurdle events. Fontaine posted a wind-aided mark of 14.92 (+2.1 m/s) in the 110-meter hurdles, while Collins posted a 400-meter hurdles time of 55.84 in his outdoor debut.
On the women's side, sophomore Kathleen Medill paced the Falcons with a third-place finish in the high jump after matching her career-best clearance of 5'5¾" – a mark just shy of the program's all-time standings. Senior Aryn Maxwell and junior Megan Irvine both scored for the Falcons in the 400-meter events, as Maxwell finished sixth in the hurdles (1:06.17) and Irvine took seventh in the dash (1:00.03).
Although the Texas A&M Invitational is complete, track and field action continues for the Falcons this weekend, as the remainder of the squad heads up to Fort Collins tomorrow (April 14) for the Doug Max Invitational. Action is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. (MT) on the Jack Christiansen Track.
