LONG BEACH, Calif. – Junior Parker Spearman recorded the fifth-best javelin throw in Academy history during a winning performance this afternoon (April 18), as members of the Air Force track and field team opened a busy weekend of California competition at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Long Beach.
The junior recorded a career-best throw of 218'9" – a personal improvement of more than a foot – to distance himself from rest of the 12-thrower field by nearly 20 feet. Spearman led the Falcons to a 1-2 finish in the event, as classmate Bailey Ishler finished second with a distance of 194'10" – a mark just shy of his personal best.
Spearman was one of two Air Force throwers to impact the program's all-time standings today at Jack Rose Track, as sophomore Addyson Smith improved her distance in shot put to 43'4¼" and moved up one spot to ninth on the program's top-10 list.
Senior Sam Hinegardner posted a season-best clearance of 6'9½" to finish fourth out of 21 athletes in the high jump, while also placing amongst the top half of the 34-athlete field in the pole vault. Sophomore Mitch Lipe recorded the Falcons' best finish of the day in that event, as he recorded a clearance of 16'7¼" to tie for eighth. Hinegardner and sophomore Greg Skage – competing in his first outdoor appearance since last May – posted matching clearances of 16'1¼" to tie for 14th.
On the track, junior Terrell Bradford and senior Reece Pontious finished 11th (10.91) and 12th (10.95), respectively, out of 29 total runners in the 100-meter dash.
Freshman Ari Martinez and sophomore Kathleen Medill accounted for the women's best finishes this afternoon, as they tied for third in the high jump with matching clearances of 5'5¾". Part of a five-way tie for third in the 27-jumper event, Martinez added a half inch to her previous best to move into 11th on the program's all-time standings – a spot she shares with Medill, who matched her career high for the third time in four meets.
Air Force placed a pair of athletes within the top half of the pole vault standings, as senior Kathryn Tomczak tied for 11th (12'3½") and freshman Erika Willis tied for 17th (11'9¾"). Junior Megan Irvine also earned a finish within the top half of the overall standings, posting a 200-meter time of 25.79 to finish 18th in the 36-sprinter field.
Three Falcons open competition at the Mt. SAC Relays later tonight (April 18) in Torrance, while the squad splits for three meets around Southern California tomorrow (April 19).
