TUCSON, Ariz. – Tallying 6278 points in his collegiate debut, Air Force freshman Wyatt Murphy won the "B" section of the Jim Click Decathlon, which wrapped up this afternoon (April 5) in Tucson. Murphy, one of three Falcons competing in the decathlon at Roy P. Drachman Stadium, finished the two-day event with a 111-point margin over the meet's second-place finisher.
Murphy maintained the lead throughout the second day of competition, tallying point totals within the top-half of the 12-athlete field during four of the five events. His best finish came from a third-place finish in his 110-meter hurdles debut (16.10), while also finishing fifth in his first collegiate discus throw (105'0") and 1500-meter run (4:55.42). The freshman improved his distance in the javelin throw by nearly 20 feet (145'1") to place sixth and wrapped up his total with an outdoor debut of 10'6" in the pole vault (ninth).
Sophomore Tyler Gurchiek finished fifth in his first collegiate decathlon (6013), while freshman Matthew Walters placed 10th with 4600 points. Gurchiek led all competitors in the pole vault, as he bettered the field by two feet during a career-best 15'5" performance. He also posted a career-best mark in the 110-meter hurdles (16.22, fifth), while making his first collegiate appearance in the 1500-meter run (4:42.90, third), javelin throw (99'9", 10th) and discus throw (98'0", 11th). Following a no-height in the pole vault, Walters rebounded with top-three finishes in his collegiate debut of the javelin throw (153'6", third) and 1500-meter run (4:34.92, second). The freshman also finished among the top 10 in his first 110-meter hurdles event (17.47, eighth) and posted a distance of 82'9" in his discus debut (12th).
Although the trio has wrapped up competition at the Jim Click Shootout, their teammates begin action this afternoon at the two-day Colorado Invitational in Boulder.
