Mikayla Gallagher (10,000-meter run) and Wyatt Murphy (decathlon) tallied Freshman Class Records on Thursday.
CLOVIS, Calif. – Two Air Force Freshman Class Records fell this evening (May 9), as the track and field team continued competition at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships in Clovis. Mikayla Gallagher and Wyatt Murphy both broke Class Records, while accounting for scoring finishes during the second day of action at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Gallagher, competing in the first 10,000-meter run of her collegiate career, clocked the fifth-fastest time in Academy history – and took more than two minutes off of the previous Freshman Class Record – after clocking a time of 34:36.91 to finish sixth in the full 20-runner event.
Murphy capped his first conference decathlon with a Freshman Class Record of 6504 points and a sixth-place finish in the overall standings. Murphy capped the event with his best finish of the day, posting a 15-second PR to take fourth in the 1500-meter run (4:40.88). He posted career-best marks in the discus throw (111'7", seventh) and pole vault (11'3¾", seventh), while adding a fifth-place time of 15.65 in the 110-meter hurdles and a seventh-place distance of 139'5" in the javelin. With his total – a 226-point personal improvement – Murphy added 29 points to the Class Record that had stood since 2010.
In addition to the scoring finish from Murphy, the men picked up a pair of top-eight marks in the 10,000-meter run. Senior Jacob Bilvado, a native of nearby Visalia, posted a time of 30:48.16 to finish fourth in the 16-runner race, while classmate Nathan Thomas used a strong final lap to claim fifth in 30:48.81.
After two events, the men are in second with 12 points, while the women are in ninth with three. The conference championships continues tomorrow (May 10) afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The women's hammer throw kicks the day off at 2:00 p.m. (PT).
