Falcon Men's Soccer Slated for a Pair of Matches this Weekend

No. 25 Air Force Men's Soccer takes on Sacramento State, Friday at 5 PM PT, and UC Davis, Sunday at 1 PM PT
THIS WEEKEND: The 25th-ranked Falcons (1-0) continue action on the road with matches two and three of a five-game road stint to open the 2019 campaign.  On Friday (Sept. 6), Air Force will take on Sacramento State (2-0) in Sacramento in a 5 PM PT matchup before traveling to Davis, California, on Sunday to take on UC Davis (1-0-1) at 1 PM PT.
 
THE SERIES: Sacramento State leads Air Force in the 16-match series, 9-6-1. The teams have played in Sacramento in 14-of-16 meetings, with the Falcons taking four victories and posting one tie. Air Force is undefeated when playing the Hornets at USAFA. Air Force beat Sacramento State the last meeting, 1-0, in 2014.
 
In the six-match series, the Aggies of UC Davis and Air Force have tied more times than either team has won. Air Force leads UC Davis in wins, 2-1, with the remaining three matches ending in draws. Air Force has yet to win a match in Davis, California, losing one and tying in another; similarily, the Falcons are undefeated at home against the Aggies, posting a 2-0-1 home-defense record. In their last meeting (2014), Air Force blanked UC Davis, 3-0.
 
LAST TIME THEY PLAYED THE HORNETS: On September 21, 2014, Zach Hill's goal in the 85th minute lifted Air Force men's soccer to a 1-0 win at Sacramento State at Hornet Field.
 
Hill scored his second goal of the season, taking a pass from Joey Haug and chipping in from the front of the goal mouth.
 
Jake Schenk and the Falcon defense posted their fourth shutout of the season. Schenk had five saves, while the AFA defense also had a team save.
 
Air Force had a 15-12 advantage in shots. Sacramento State had the corner kick advantage 6-3. Trey Pujats led the Falcons with five shots. Ben Kern added three shot attempts.
 
IN THE LAST MEETING WITH THE AGGIES: On September 17, 2017, John Sims registered two goals to lead the Falcons to a 3-0 shutout of the UC Davis Aggies at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
 
Klint Parker tallied the first strike for Air Force in the 29th minute, charging into the box to redirect a deflection back into the Aggies' goal. Ten minutes later, Sims registered his first goal of the season via Austin Dewing's assist.
 
Air Force continued to push the pace into the second half, holding the Aggie offense at bay with staunch defense, limiting shot opportunities for UC Davis' leading shooters, Noah Wilson and Matt Baringer.
 
In the final minute of the match, senior midfielder Isaac Strever found an opportunity for an assist as he Sims was left open in the box. Strever delivered an accurate cross-field ball where Sims connected with a brilliant header for his second goal of the season.
 
At the final whistle, Air Force held the advantage in shots, 12-10, and shots on goal, 8-3. Tucker Bone, Dewing and Sims led the team with two shots apiece.
 
Air Force delivered UC Davis' second shutout of the season, only preceded by Denver's 3-0 shutout on Friday. The Falcons posted five shutouts in their first-six wins of the 2017 season.
 
UP NEXT: Air Force returns to the Golden State for another pair of matches to close out the five-match road stint. The Falcons will take on Cal State Fullerton, Friday (Sept. 13) at 7 PM PT, in Fullerton, California. On Sunday (Sept. 15) Air Force will face off against UC Riverside at 11 AM PT.

The Falcons are ranked 23rd in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25 and 25th in the United Soccer Coaches Top 25. The cadets are also among those receiving votes in the College Soccer News Top 30. Seattle U is among those receiving votes in both the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 and College Soccer News Top 30 while the CSN Top 30 also features Grand Canyon and Utah Valley among those receiving votes.
 
LAST WEEKEND: Air Force grinded to a 2-1 victory over Army West Point in the first service academy contest of the year, Saturday evening (Aug. 31), in West Point, New York. Sophomores JT D'Emidio and Tristan Trager notched a goal apiece to the secure the win in the season opener.
 
In the 25th minute, sophomore forward JT D'Emidio put the Falcons on the board as he bent one past four Army defenders into the far post from 18-yards out.
 
The Falcons continued to apply pressure on the Black Knight defense as D'Emidio gave the Army fans another scare with a rocket sent just over the cross bar in the waning seconds of the first half. D'Emidio, the Falcons' Rookie of the Year in 2018, led Air Force with two shots by the close of the first half. Both teams took four shots in the first 45 minutes.
 
Army had a good chance for an equalizer in the 57th minute as the Black Knights drew a foul for a free kick at the 18-yard line. Keenan O'shea lined up for the shot but put too much boot behind the ball, sailing it high over the crossbar.
 
In the 61st minute, Air Force sophomore Tristan Trager ran into the Black Knight's box for a one-vs-one with the Army keeper Justin Stoll. Trager got all of his leg behind the shot but the keeper made an athletic save to keep Army within striking distance. Less than a minute later, Army's Christian Takaki punched in the equalizer off a cross from 15-yards straight out.
 
Undeterred by the tying score, Air Force continued to run its offense as planned. In the 65th minute, Alec Young dribbled into the box and found Trager open for another attempt, this time Trager finished with a ball to the far post past a diving Stoll, silencing a rowdy Army crowd.
 
Back-and-forth action ensued up to the 78th minute where Army's Jake Burgess sent a dangerous ball to the near upper-90 sailing just wide of an equalizing goal. Air Force responded with a stingier defense, determined to keep the tying goal from finding a home in the nylon.
