WEST POINT, N.Y. – Air Force and Army skated to a 3-3 overtime in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Friday, Jan. 10, at Tate Rink in West Point, N.Y. The last three games between Air Force and Army have ended in a tie. Air Force extended its unbeaten streak to six games (3-0-3) against the Black Knights. Army earned the extra point in the standings with a goal in the ninth round of the shootout.
Late in the first period, Army's John Keranen took a backhand shot from the slot that hit the skate of a Falcon defenseman. The puck went right to Brett Abdelnour on the post and his shot snuck under the pads of Alex Schilling and just trickled over the goal line for a 1-0 Black Knight lead at 18:45.
Army (13-7-2, 10-5-2 AHA) outshot Air Force 5-0 in the first seven minutes of the second period. Onn Air Force's second shot of the period, freshman Luke Manning tied the score at 9:36 of the second. Manning ran down a loose puck in the neutral zone and beat two Army players off the wall. He then skated in uncontested and netted his third of the season with a wrister high, glove side. Two minutes later, Shawn Knowlton drew a penalty and the Falcons capitalized on the power play. Brandon Koch's shot from the top of the left circle was going wide of the net, but it hit a defenseman's skate and went into the net at 11:41. Zach Mirageas and Manning assisted on Koch's second of the season.
Army tied the game at 9:51 of the third period when Keranen scored a power play goal. Anthony Firriolo's shot was saved, but as everyone crashed the net, Keranen punched in his second of the season to tie the game at 2-2. Air Force answered with a power-play goal of its own with 8:07 remaining. Zach Mirageas' shot was saved, but freshman Willie Reim put back the rebound for a 3-2 lead. With 1:40 remaining in the third, Army pulled its goalie for the extra attacker. With under a minute left, Colin Bilek's shot was saved but Eric Butte collected the loose puck. His shot, from behind the goal line, bounced off the back of Schilling's skate and tied the game at 3-3 with 50 seconds left.
Neither team scored in the 5-on-5 overtime or the 3-on-3 session, sending the 78th meeting between the two teams to a shootout. It took nine rounds to decide the shootout before Kevin Dineen scored, giving Army the extra point in the standings.
Army outshot Air Force, 36-35, in the game. Air Force was 2-for-3 on the power play while Army was 1-for-5. Schilling tied his career high with 33 saves. Army goalie Trevin Kozlowski made 32 for the Black Knights.
"What a great college hockey game," head coach Frank Serratore said. "Anyone who was in this building tonight should be chomping at the bit to come back tomorrow. This was a tremendously well-played and entertaining game. Unfortunately for us, it didn't go our way. We didn't hold the lead and they got the bounce they needed to tie it. What a performance by the two goalies in this game and in the shootout. I told our guys to keep their heads high. We go into Saturday knowing that if we win the game, we win the series."
Air Force (6-9-4, 6-5-4 AHA) and Army conclude the two-game AHA series on Saturday, Jan. 11, in West Point, N.Y.
