FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Air Force dropped a 60-40 Mountain West contest to Colorado State University, Saturday afternoon in Moby Arena. The Falcons drop to 4-14 overall with a 2-5 mark in the league while the Rams improve to 9-9 with a 3-4 conference record.
Kaelin Immel led the Falcons in scoring for the third-straight game, dropping 17 points, collecting a season-high eight rebounds and picking off a game-high four steals. Briana Autrey-Thompson dished out a career high seven assists while scoring three points and picking off three steals.
Air Force's bench combined for 16 points led by freshman Kamri Heath's eight point performance, the second-highest scoring mark for the Falcons.
Air Force's defense was visibly disruptive for the Rams as the Falcons picked off 14 steals on the game, but the offense struggled to sink shots, missing all 13 attempts from deep and shooting just 29-percent from the field.
The Rams were led by SMU transfer Makenzie Ellis who scored 19 and collected eight rebounds.
The Rams took the court by storm, tallying points down low while the Falcons had trouble getting shots to fall. At the media timeout (3:44) Air Force was shooting 1-6 from the field, missing their first five attempts, while CSU drained six of nine attempts. As the Falcons continued miss shots, the Rams went on a 15-1 scoring run over three minutes, closing the quarter hitting eight straight shots from the field. Colorado State shot 71-percent form the field (10-14), building a 23-5 at the end of the first 10.
The Falcons got some shots to start falling early in the second quarter, scoring eight points and forcing turnovers, cutting the Ram's lead to 16 by the media timeout (3:15). Colorado State stalled out after the timeout, going on a scoring drought while turning the ball over nine times in seven minutes, but Air Force was unable to capitalize on the rut, struggling to hit their shots and stalemating the game for several minutes. At the halftime horn, neither team scored since the media timeout. CSU led Air Force, 29-13.
Air Force opened the second half with a 4-0 scoring run but CSU quickly settled in and outscored the Falcons 8-6 by the media timeout (4:54). Both teams dropped 12 points on the quarter and shot roughly 35-percent from the field. Makenzie Ellis was the force multiplier for CSU, dropping 17 points and collecting six boards by the end of the third quarter. She shot 70-percent from the field and a perfect 3-3 from deep through the first three quarters.
The Falcons and Rams scored back and forth in the fourth quarter, putting up five and seven points, respectively, by the media timeout (4:57). CSU went on an 8-0 scoring run out of the timeout to extend to their largest lead of the game, 55-32. The Rams' 8-0 scoring run improved to a 13-2 scoring run with a 26-point lead heading into the final minutes of the game. At the final horn, CSU led Air Force, 60-40.
Next up, the Falcons return to the Academy for a pair of games next week, hosting Utah State on Wednesday (Jan. 22) at 6:30 p.m. in Clune Arena. The Falcons downed the Aggies, 62-45, in the first meeting of the season (Jan. 8) in Logan, Utah.
