Jake Levin scored the Falcons' only goal in the exhibition game
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Team USA's Jeremy Wilmer scored the game-winning goal in the third period as the Under-18 team defeated Air Force, 3-1, in an exhibition game Sunday, Dec. 13, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
Air Force struck first after Jake Marti drew a penalty that put the Falcons on the power play. Falcon defenseman Jake Levin gained the red line and ripped a puck around the boards and into the zone. Team USA won the scrum in the corner, but the clear attempt was right on the tape of Levin at the center point. The senior captain gave the Falcons a 1-0 with his slap shot at 15:50.
Late in the second period, Team USA tied the game. Air Force goalie Alex Schilling's stick was knocked from his hand and it slid to the back wall. Team USA's Ty Murchison sent the puck around the boards and Ty Gallagher scored with a wrister from the right point at 19:03. Clay Cosintino also assisted on the play for the Under-18 team.
Team USA came out in the third period and put the pressure on the Falcons. Less than three minutes into the period, Jeremy Wilmer put back a rebound of Ethan Starkey's shot at 2:44. Midway through the period, Marti nearly tied the game. After winning a faceoff in the offensive zone, his shot rank of the post with 9:52 left. Late in the period, the Falcons had some 5-on-3 power-play time. After a flurry of three shots on goal by the Falcons, a penalty was called on Air Force that nullified the two-man advantage. With 1:40 left in the third, Air Force pulled the goalie for the extra attacker and had two shots, one blocked and one saved. With eight seconds left, Team USA's Justin Janicke intercepted a Falcon pass in the neutral zone and scored in the empty net.
"Our attention to detail is lacking," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We have to be better in our own zone. We have to get pucks out and be better on the breakout. The biggest highlight for us was that Alex Schilling rebounded from the Robert Morris series. He may have been the best player on the ice. He is a massive piece to our puzzle."
Air Force outshot Team USA, 27-26, in the game. AF was 1-for-4 on the power play while the Under-18's were 0-for-5. Alex Schilling made 23 saves for the Falcons. Kaidan Mbereko made 26 for Team USA.
Air Force is now idle until an Atlantic Hockey series, Jan. 3-4, at Niagara. The series against Sacred Heart, originally scheduled for Dec. 18-19, has been canceled.
