U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Robert Morris scored a goal in the first and second periods and two quick ones in the third for a 4-1 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey Association game, Friday, Dec. 4, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.
Midway through the first period, as Aidan Spellacy scored with a wrister from the left circle at 8:19. The Colonials took a 2-0 lead in the second as senior defenseman Nick Jenny scored at 11:22. Grant Hebert set up Jenny in the right circle for his third goal of the season and second point of the night.
Early in the third period, the Colonials scored two goals in a span of 14 seconds. Thirty-three seconds into the third period, a penalty was called on Falcon freshman forward Thomas Daskas. The Colonials quickly capitalized as Matthew Guerra scored 46 seconds into the period with a shot from the high slot. Just 14 seconds later, Nick Lalonde gave RMU a 4-0 lead on a rebound at 19:00. After the goal, Zach LaRocque replaced Alex Schilling in the net for the Falcons.
Less than five minutes later, the Falcons got on the board. Daskas won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Zach Mirageas ripped a shot from the right point for his first of the season at 5:04. The assist was the first point of Daskas' career.
Each team had 28 shots on goal. RMU was 1-for-2 on the power play while AF was 0-for-2. Freshman Noah West made 27 saves for the Colonials. Schilling played the first 41 minutes for the Falcons and made 20 saves. LaRocque made four in the final 19 minutes.
"We have a really young team," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We need to stay positive and play a simple game. The young Falcons have a long way to go. Before you can win, first you have to be difficult to play against. I didn't think we were particularly hard to play against tonight. We took that penalty early in third, the worst thing that could have happened to us at that point. Instead of us maybe making it 2-1, they made it 3-0. That's what good, experienced teams do."
Air Force and Robert Morris conclude the two-game league series on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 4:05 pm MT at Cadet Ice Arena.
