Air Force Lacrosse Pushes past Utah, 9-8

The Falcons overcame a four-goal deficit to secure their second road win
SALT LAKE CITY - The 17th-ranked Air Force Falcons climbed out of an early deficit to overtake Utah on the road, 9-8, Saturday afternoon at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Air Force improves to 2-1 while the Utes drop to 1-2.
The Falcons were led in scoring by a pair of sophomores in Quincy Peene and Brendan Crouse who scored two goals each. Peene has led Air Force in scoring in two games this season and leads the Falcons with six goals on the year. Crouse led the Falcons with eight shots on the game. Sophomore Chase Douglas scored the Falcons' first goal, Gianni Orlando joined Peene and Crouse in second-quarter scoring, seniors Chet Dunstan and Jake Thornally scored in the third quarter and Trey Lervick scored the final goal. Lervick fired off seven shots and a team-high five shots on goal.
Air Force assists leader Brandon Dodd tallied two feeds on the game, he leads the Falcons with seven this season. Freshman teammate Ethan Grandolfo also dished out a pair of assists and sophomore teammate August Johnson tallied one for his second assist this season.
Junior goalie Braden Host improved to two wins on the season, making 15 saves in cage for a .652 save-percentage. Freshman keeper Jason Rose saw action in a critical moment, filling in for Host who was charged with a 30-second pushing foul. Rose and the Falcon defense stepped up big to hold off a tying goal in the fourth quarter man-down situation.
Senior faceoff man Ryan Lynch had a career day at the dot, winning 8-15 attempts and collecting six ground balls.
The Falcons' Chase Douglas was the first to light the scoreboard with leaning shot via an assist from freshman teammate Ethan Grandolfo at the 13:48 mark. The remainder of the first quarter was all Utah led by Jimmy Perkins who rattled off three-straight goals and assisted Mac Costin in the fourth goal. The Utes' Colin Burke plugged in goal number five at the 2:42 mark to give Utah a 5-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
The tables turned in the second quarter as Air Force punched in four goals while holding the Utes scoreless. Sophomore goal scorer Quincy Peene scored the first two goals of the quarter, assisted by August Johnson at the 9:24 mark and unassisted for his second at the 7:39 mark. Peene leads Air Force with six goals this season. Brendan Crouse scored Air Force's fourth goal with a heater to the upper deck, bringing the Falcons within one at 6:05. Colorado product Gianni Orlando hit the equalizer with a rocket from 15 yards out, fed by senior co-team captain Matthew Schwartz. At the halftime horn, Air Force and Utah were knotted up at five but the Falcons were the clear aggressors of the first half, outshooting the Utes, 27-13 (14-8).
The third quarter was an even split with both teams netting two goals each. Utah Jumped out to a 7-5 lead with goals from usual suspects Costin and Perkins. Air Force knotted it up at seven with goals from Chet Dunstan and Crouse. Dunstan scored top cheese at the 4:29 mark via a feed from Grandolfo then the Falcons' assist leader, Brandon Dodd, fed Jake Thornally who continued to exploit the top shelf.
Air Force took the lead for the first time since the opening goal with Crouse's second goal in an unassisted attack at the 13:19 mark. Utah had a golden opportunity to tie the Falcons at the 10:25 mark as junior goalie Braden Host was charged with a 30-second pushing foul, giving the Utes a man-up opportunity against freshman keeper Jason Rose who was seeing his first action as a collegiate goalie. Rose, whose older brother Mitch Rose started in cage for the Falcons in the 2017 campaign, lived up to the name, holding off the Utes' attack to secure the one-goal lead.
Senior co-team captain Trey Lervick, who ascertained the upper deck to be a soft target, took aim and rifled in high for an insurance goal with 4:38 remaining. Dodd's, a Utah native, facilitated with the goal with his second assist. Utah's Josh Stout scored a diving goal with 2:23 to bring the Utes within one while giving the squad a spark of energy. Determined to finish strong, Host denied Utah's final efforts, making two saves in the waning seconds to seal the deal at 9-8.
Up next, Air Force travels to the University of Denver for the Pioneer Faceoff Classic to take on Cleveland State and St. Bonaventure, Saturday (Feb. 21) and Sunday (Feb. 22), respectively, at Peter Barton Lacrosse stadium. Both games are slated for an 11 a.m. MT start.
