Riley Snyder led Air Force women’s basketball with career-high 32 points, besting the No. 2 team in the MWC
SAN JOSE - Air Force battled San Jose State to a 67-66 win, knocking off the Mountain West's number two team in their home gym, Saturday afternoon. The Falcons improve to 6-19 overall with their fourth win in the league in league play. San Jose State drops to 9-5 in the MW with a 15-10 overall record.
Sophomore forward Riley Snyder was superb for the Falcons as she led the squad to victory with a career-high 32 points, setting a new high-scoring standard for Air Force this season. The native of Fruita, Colorado, shot 52-percent from the field (11-21), 63-percent from deep (5-8) and perfect from the free throw line (5-5). Her five three-pointers marked a career-best and the most by any Falcon this season. Snyder rounded out her stat line with eight rebounds, three assists and a steal. The performance marked the first 30-point showing of her career and fifth game with 20 or more points this season.
Air Force's co-team captains, Kaelin Immel and Emily Conroe, led from the front, combining for 28 points, 17 rebounds and six assists. Immel tallied 22 points, four assists, three rebounds and sunk a career-best nine free throws. Conroe snagged a career-best 14 rebounds while scoring six points and dishing a pair of assists. The duo also swiped two steals apiece.
Sophomore point guard Briana Autrey-Thompson facilitated the offense with a game-high eight assists and registered three points, three boards and two steals. Freshman teammate Allyah Marlett came off the bench for four assists while Haley Jones was the only Falcon to score a bucket off the bench.
Air Force out-rebounded the Spartans, 46-39, and outshot them from the field, 38-percent to 35-percent. Both teams turned the ball over 14 times.
San Jose State had a trio of players with double-figure scoring marks, led by Tyra Whitehead's double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Ayzhiana Basallo scored 13 points and dished out a team-high five assists.
Air Force got off to a strong start with an 11-2 scoring run from tipoff to media timeout (5:00). The Spartans dug in and battled back into the game, taking an 18-17 lead with a quarter buzzer-beater.
The second quarter was all Air Force as the Falcons outscored the Spartans, 21-5, highlighted by Snyder's 11 points by way of three three-pointers and a bucket. The Falcons built a 15-point lead by the halftime horn. Snyder had 18 first half points and knocked down four three-balls, tying her career-high mark. The Falcons had a well-rounded first half as Emily Conroe snagged six rebounds, Briana Autrey-Thompson dished seven assists and Kaelin Immel scored nine points.
Air Force built its largest lead of the game out of the halftime break as Immel drained a jumper to put the Falcons up 17 points. From that moment on, the Spartans began digging out of their hole, scoring 17 unanswered points to knot the game at 45 with 2:39 remaining in the third quarter. At the end of the quarter, the teams were tied at 50. San Jose State shot 53-percent from the field (8-15), 40-percent from deep (2-5) and 90-percent from the free throw line (9-10) on the quarter. Air Force shot just 24-percent from the field, missing all five three-point attempts.
The Falcons regained as much as six-point lead in the fourth quarter after Snyder knocked down her final three-pointer of the night. The Spartans dug out of that deficit at the one-minute mark, tying the Falcons at 62 and taking the lead at the free throw line, 63-62. Immel regained the lead for the Falcons at the free throw line, sinking three-of-four attempts on two drawn fouls to lift the Falcons to 65-63. In the waning seconds of the game, hustle defense by Snyder led to a steal and fast break where she drew a shooting foul. Snyder drained both shots for the eventual game-winner. With two-seconds remaining, SJSU's Megan Anderson sunk a three-ball to bring the Spartans within one but San Jose State was unable to convert a turnover for points by the expiration of time.
Next up, Air Force returns to home to host Fresno State in Clune Arena, Wednesday (Feb. 19), at 6:30 p.m. The Falcons are looking to make even on a 61-52 loss to the Bulldogs on January 29.
