Pierce Pluemer scored his first of the season in the 1-1 overtime tie
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Trevor Stone scored a power-play goal early in the second overtime session to give Air Force two points in a 1-1 overtime tie with Mercyhurst, Friday, Feb. 21, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.
Mercyhurst (5-24-2, 3-20-2 AHA) opened the scoring at 14:47 as Paul Maust put back a rebound of Brendan Schneider's shot for a 1-0 lead.
Air Force (8-17-6, 8-11-6) outshot Mercyhurst, 20-2, in the second period, and Falcons tied the game with 1:21 left in the middle period. Brandon Koch gained the zone down the left wing and sent the puck into the crease. Senior Pierce Pluemer tipped it in for his first goal of the season at 18:39. Freshman Dalton Weigel collected with his first career point with an assist on the play.
The Lakers had a 10-7 shot advantage in third period, but neither team was able to score. In the first overtime, each had one shot on goal. Late in the 5-on-5 overtime, freshman Willie Reim drew a penalty and the Falcons went on the power play with 36 seconds left in overtime. The power play carried over into the second overtime, as the Falcons had a 4-on-3 advantage. Jake Levin slid the puck to Zach Mirageas in the left circle. Mirageas' blast was saved, but Stone put back the rebound on the back door at 4:32 to give the Falcons the extra point in the standings.
Air Force outshot Mercyhurst, 44-25, in the game. The Falcons were 0-for-3 on the power play (the 3-on-3 goal does not count in the official stats) while Mercyhurst was 0-for-1. Garrett Metcalf made 43 saves for the Lakers while Alex Schilling made 24 for the Falcons.
"It was great to get two of the three points," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We needed to find a way to get it done and get that extra point. Their goalie was outstanding. Our fourth line gave us a good, hard-working goal to tie it. We need to find a way to get three points on Saturday and, if we do, this will be a successful weekend. This was a step in the right direction."
The same two teams conclude the two-game AHA series on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 5:05 pm MT at the Cadet Ice Arena. Before the game, the Falcons will honor their six seniors in the final regular-season home game.
