Air Force lacrosse splits the Pioneer Faceoff Classic over the weekend
DENVER - Air Force cruised by St. Bonaventure, 11-5, in their second game of the weekend at the Pioneer Faceoff Classic, Sunday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. The Falcons improve to 3-2 on the season while the Bonnies remain winless (0-4).
Senior team captain Trey Lervick led from the front with two goals and three assists for a personal season-high five-point showing. Lervick took four shots on the game and scooped up three ground balls. Lervick concluded the Faceoff Classic with five goals and four assists and has scored a goal in four-straight games.
Freshman attacker Ethan Grandolfo netted two goals on five shots while scooping up a game-high five ground balls. He finished the weekend with six goals. Freshman teammate and Air Force assists leader Brandon Dodd, who has an assist in every game this season, notched a goal, a pair of assists and picked up two ground balls against the Bonnies.
Junior midfielder Matthew O'Rourk notched his first goals of the season with a two goals on three shots. Senior teammate Jake Thornally, who has scored a goal in every game this season, netted a goal on his only attempted shot. Freshman Tommy Hellman scored his first collegiate goal and dished out an assist for a two-point game.
After four years of consistently grinding for the Falcons, senior defender Chandler Coons finally saw the culmination of his hard work with his first collegiate goal on his second career shot, sending the Air Force sideline into a frenzy.
Junior goalie Braden Host won his third game in goal making seven saves while allowing just four goals. Freshman goalkeeper Jason Rose Rose recorded a save in just over 11 minutes of action in the fourth quarter.
Senior faceoff man Ryan Lynch had a career day winning six-of-six attempts at the dot, marking his first perfect game. He also snagged up three ground balls. Dylan Frankhouser, Air Force's alternate faceoff man, won five of his 13 attempts and picked up a ground ball. Seniors Doc Szlachetka and Chet Dunstan combined for eight ground balls on the day with four each.
St. Bonaventure was led in scoring by Jake Emiick with two goals. The Bonnies' keeper, Ben Mazur, recorded six saves on the game.
Air Force oushot the Bonnies, 35-25 (20-13), picked up twice as many ground balls (41-20), won 11-of-19 face offs.
Next up, Air Force travels to Charlottesville, Virginia, to take on the 2019 NCAA champion Virginia Cavaliers, Sunday (Mar. 1) at 1 p.m. ET.
