Falcons Set for Mountain West Track & Field Championships

The 2020 championship meet will be held at the ABQ Convention Center on Feb. 27-29.
The Air Force track and field team kicks off the championship portion of the indoor season this week, as it travels to Albuquerque, N.M., for the 2020 Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships. The three-day meet, which will be held at the ABQ Convention Center, begins on Thursday, Feb. 27, and continues through Saturday, Feb. 29.
MEET INFORMATION
The Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held in downtown Albuquerque for the sixth-straight year. Tickets can be purchased at the entrance to the Convention Center, beginning one hour before the first event (there is no charge for Thursday's meet). For fans unable to attend the meet, real-time results will be available via Record Timing and the meet will be broadcast on FloTrack through its subscription service (direct links are available at GoAirForceFalcons.com). In addition, updates and highlights will be posted to Air Force's social media sites (@af_tfxc) throughout the week.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
The first four events of the men's heptathlon get underway at 10:00 a.m. (MT) on Thursday, Feb. 27, while the distance medley relays are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m., that afternoon. Friday's competition begins with the conclusion of the heptathlon at 10:00 a.m., while the individual events start at 12:30 p.m. (field) and 1:30 p.m. (running). Championship Saturday starts at 9:30 a.m., while the track events begin at 11:10 a.m. A complete schedule of events is located on page two of the attached release.
PARTICIPATING TEAMS
The Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships will feature 11 women's teams (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, #23 New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State and Wyoming), as well as the men's teams from Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Jose State, Utah State and Wyoming.
HISTORY 101
Since the formation of the Mountain West, Air Force has captured three men's titles (2012, 2016, 2018) and its athletes have stood atop the indoor podium 72 times and collected 244 all-conference selections. Former standout Jamiel Trimble is the Academy's most decorated indoor athlete, with five conference titles, eight individual all-MW awards and the Meet Record at 200 meters (20.67 in 2017). Current senior Michael Rhoads set the Meet Record in the 800-meter run last year (1:47.82), while former Falcons Justin Tyner (5000-meter run: 14:13.33 in 2011), Taylor Smith (high jump: 7'2½" in 2016) and Kyle Pater (pole vault: 18'6½" in 2017) also hold MW Meet Records.

Entering championship weekend, Air Force holds the league's top marks in the 60-meter dash (Charles Dimnwaobi: 6.72), 800-meter run (Michael Rhoads: 1:47.65) and pole vault (Mitch Lipe/Greg Skage: 17'6½"), while being listed among the league's top-five an additional 21 times.
HEADING HOME
Conference competitors Aric Kedge, Ari Martinez and Kelsey Owens all hail from Albuquerque. Kedge attended Albuquerque Academy, while Martinez and Owens both attended St. Pius X High School.
LOOKING AROUND THE NATION
Highlighted by a No. 4 ranking in the 800-meter run from Michael Rhoads (1:47.65), four Falcons are listed among the nation's top 25. Maria Mettler holds a No. 12 ranking in the 5000-meter run (15:49.58), while Mitch Lipe and Greg Skage are tied for 21st in the pole vault behind matching clearances of 17'6½". In addition, the men remain at No. 45 in the national standings, while the women are ranked 71st.
SQUAD GOALS
The Feb 24 edition of the USTFCCCA #EventSquad rankings features five Air Force groups listed within the nation's top 25. The men's pole vault lineup continued its top-five listing at No. 4, while the women's 5000-meter squad remained at No. 14 for the second-straight week. The men's 800-meter run jumped from unranked to No. 19 following a strong weekend at the Air Force Collegiate Open, while the men's triple jump and 5000-meter run are ranked 24th and 25th, respectively. The #EventSquad rankings are determined by using the cumulative season-best qualifying marks from a team's top-four athletes on the national descending order list.

Air Force accounted for 14 of the conference's 32 Athlete of the Week awards during the indoor season, including six of the eight awards for Men's Track and four of the eight awards for Men's Field. Michael Rhoads (track: Jan. 28, Feb. 18) and Mitch Lipe (field: Jan. 21, Feb. 25) captured multiple indoor awards during the season, while Charles Dimwaobi (track: Dec. 17), Jake Hall (field: Jan. 14), Scott Johnson (track: Jan. 21), Greg Skage (field: Jan. 28), Sam Gilman (track: Feb. 11) and Aric Kedge (track: Feb. 25) also accounted for the men's weekly awards. On the women's side, Maria Mettler (Feb. 18) and Grace Proesch (Feb. 25) claimed Track awards, while Ari Martinez (Jan. 28) and Addyson Smith (Feb. 25) captured Field events.

The 14 weekly Mountain West awards are the most in a single season for the Falcons – easily bettering the previous record of 10, which was set during the 2016 indoor season and matched during that year's outdoor campaign.
