Kaelin Immel and Riley Snyder led Air Force women’s basketball with 17 points apiece
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Riley Snyder hit the game-winning shot with five seconds remaining in regulation to propel Air Force to a 51-49 win against Mountain West foe, San Diego State, Saturday afternoon in Viejas Arena. The Falcons improve to 5-18 with a 3-9 mark in the league while SDSU drops to 11-14, 6-7 MW.
Snyder and co-team captain Kaelin Immel led the Falcons with 17 apiece, lifting Air Force to its first win since January 8. Snyder shot 47-percent from the field (8-17), tallied three rebounds and an assist while Immel snagged six boards and shot a perfect 4-4 from the free-throw line.
Sophomore point guard Briana Autrey-Thompson registered a career-best 11 assists while scoring five points and collecting four defensive rebounds. Junior teammate Emily Conroe scored eight points, snatched eight rebounds and blocked three shots on the day. Conroe's eight boards pushed her over 500 career rebounds, becoming the sixth Falcon in the Division-I era to accomplish the feat.
Cierra Winters led the bench in scoring with four points while also snagging four rebounds. She shot 2-3 from the field on the game.
San Diego State was led by a trio of scorers with 11 points each in Sophia Ramos, Taylor Kalmer and Zayn Dornstauder. Ramos led the squad in rebounding with eight boards.
The Falcons built as much as a five point lead halfway through the opening quarter but the Aztecs were able to close the distance by the end of the first 10 minutes, trailing Air Force, 12-11. Snyder, Conroe and Immel did all the scoring for Air Force in first quarter, tallying four points each.
The Falcons rebuilt their lead to five at the 7:05 mark in the second quarter but a 5-0 Aztec scoring run in the following minutes knotted the teams up at 18 with 4:33 remaining. At the halftime horn, Air Force maintained the lead, 24-20, led in scoring by Snyder with eight points in the first half. Autrey-Thompson was facilitating the action, tallying six assists in the first half, a mark just one shy of her career-best.
The Aztecs found some traction in the third quarter, cutting Air Force's four-point lead then scoring back-and-forth with the Falcons until the expiration of the quarter. Immel went off for six points in the third quarter but Air Force shot just 19-percent (3-16) while SDSU shot 36-percent, tying the Falcons at 32 heading into the fourth quarter.
Air Force built a three-point lead early in the fourth quarter but the Aztecs hung tight and scored with the Falcons to the waning seconds of the game where the scored was knotted at 49. Following a pair of timeouts, Autrey-Thompson dished the ball to Snyder who took the final shot for air Force, draining the jumper to give the Falcons a two-point lead with just five seconds remaining. The Aztec's Sophia Ramos took the final shot for SDSU but was unable to connect.
Next up, Air Force returns home to Clune Arena where they will host defending MWC champs, Boise State, at 6:30 p.m. MT, on Wednesday (Feb. 12). The Broncos bested the Falcons in their first meeting this season, 70-61, in Boise.
