Michael Rhoads became the program's most decorated indoor All-American with his third honor.
NEW ORLEANS – Air Force's Michael Rhoads and Maria Mettler were named All-Americans for the indoor track and field season, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced this afternoon (May 26).
Although normal policy states that All-America honors are based solely on performances at the NCAA Indoor Championship meet, the Division I Track and Field Executive Committee and USTFCCCA Board of Directors agreed that, with the cancellation of the 2020 meet from the coronavirus pandemic, all athletes listed on the post-medical scratch startlist from March 11 will be recognized with All-America status.
Rhoads, who entered the aborted Championship weekend ranked fourth in the nation at 800 meters, became the Academy's most decorated Indoor All-American, with three career awards. The recently-commissioned second lieutenant, who nabbed second-team status as a sophomore (15th) and first-team accolades as a junior (eighth), advanced to his third-straight NCAA Indoor Championship meet after clocking a season-best time of 1:47.65 at the Iowa State Classic in mid-February.
After capturing All-America honors in cross country during the fall, Mettler earned her first All-America accolade on the track by posting the second-fastest 5000-meter time in Academy history (15:49.58 at the Iowa State Classic) to enter the NCAA Championships ranked eighth on the meet's final startlist. Mettler's award marks the third time in the last five years that a member of the women's team has earned an All-America honor in the 5000-meter run.
Unlike previous years, there will be no separation of first-team, second-team or honorable mention.
