PUEBLO, Colo. – An Air Force Record in the long jump from sophomore Alese Banks headlines an impressive outing for the track and field team on Saturday, March 21, as it wrapped up the outdoor-opening weekend at the Dr. Dan Caprioglio Invitational in Pueblo. Facing off against their counterparts from across the state, the Falcons collected seven first-place finishes and made 19 improvements to the program's all-time standings.
With a career-best leap of 5.89 meters (19'4"), Banks became just the third jumper in Air Force history to surpass the 19-foot mark in the long jump. Recording the record-setting mark on her second attempt, she added more than five inches to her former best and led the Falcons to a 1-2 finish in the 22-jumper event. Junior Kayla Beach, who set the previous record of 19'1¾" last year, finished second with an outdoor-opening jump of 5.78 meters (18'11¾") on her final attempt.
The women accounted for 1-2 finishes in three different jump events at the ThunderBowl on Saturday, with the second-best clearances in Air Force history headlining the performances of the vertical jumps' crew. Sophomore Morgan Glaser improved her own Air Force No. 2 all-time mark in the high jump, with a winning height of 1.81 meters (5'11¼"), while freshman Zoe Heizer debuted at No. 7 in the program's record book after recording a runner-up clearance of 1.72 meters (5'7¾"). From the pole vault runway, freshman Julie Segroves became the fifth Academy vaulter to clear 13 feet outdoors, as she used the second-best height in program history (4.04m/13'3") to win the 13-athlete event and lead the Falcons' top-two sweep, with junior Karli Neff using a career-best 3.94-meter (12'11") clearance to finish second in the meet and move up to No. 8 on the Academy's all-time standings.
Overall, the women accounted for 14 improvements to the program's all-time standings on Saturday, including multiple Air Force Top 25 marks in the 1500-meter run and 100-meter hurdles.
Cam Bodine paced a trio of juniors to a 2-3-4 finish in the 1500-meter run, while their altitude-adjusted times rewrote the record book. Bodine finished second in the 78-runner event with a raw time of 4:31.02 (4:25.30a – No. 9), while Rachel Fereday and Anna Harden finished third (4:32.15/4:26.43a – No. 11) and fourth (4:33.15/4:37.26a – No. 15), respectively. In all, the Falcons accounted for five of the top-seven finishes, as sophomore Jasleen Sidhu placed sixth (4:35.14) and junior Scarlet Fetterolf took seventh (4:37.78). In the 100-meter hurdles, Beach clocked the sixth-fastest time in Air Force history (14.50) to finish sixth in the 24-runner event, while classmate Allison Fernstrom moved into a tie for No. 13 all-time with a 10th-place time of 14.79.
Freshman Eleanor Borchard, who finished eighth, between Beach and Fernstrom, during a wind-aided heat (14.54) of the 100-meter hurdles, etched her name in the Air Force Record Book in the 400-meter hurdles, as she clocked the fifth-fastest time in Air Force history (61.28) to place second in her event debut. Glaser added a third-place time of 62.16 in the 400-meter hurdles, while classmate Ella Pears debuted a No. 22 in the flat 400 with a fifth-place time of 57.79.
From the field, freshman Mackenzie Fah earned runner-up honors in the shot put and debuted at No. 19 all-time behind a throw of 12.29 meters (40'4"), while classmate Arianna Valenzuela, who posted Air Force Top 25 marks in both the hammer and javelin events yesterday, added her name to the program's discus standings today after placing seventh with a throw of 40.81 meters (133'7' – No. 23). Sophomore Caroline Carrico joined the pair in the top-10 of both throws, finishing fourth in the shot put (11.64m/38'2¼") and 10th in the discus (38.97m/127'10").
Senior Jettason Rose and sophomore Asher Jenkins paced the men with 1-2 finishes both the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints – with the latter pairing accounting for two of the six-fastest time in Air Force history. Rose opened his day with a wind-aided 10.21 (+2.6) on the straightaway to finish first out of 38 runners, before completing the sprint sweep with a winning time of 20.38 – a finish that accounted for the second-fastest time in Air Force history and reset a Senior Class Record that Javin Bostic set last spring. Jenkins, who posted a 10.31 in the same wind-aided 100-meter heat as Rose, capped his day with the sixth-fastest 200-meter time in program history and a 20.93 finish. Freshman Zachary DeWalt joined the pair in the top 10 of both races, finishing seventh in the 200-meter dash (21.29) and ninth in the 100-meter dash (10.61) – with the latter, in a wind-legal heat, placing the first-year sprinter at No. 17 on the Academy's all-time standings.
The men earned two more event titles at the Caprioglio Invitational, as sophomore Evan Keefe recorded the fourth-best discus distance in program history with a 56.10-meter (184'0") heave to win the 23-thrower event by more than one meter, and freshman Max McFarlane debuted at No. 19 on the program's all-time pole vault standings after clearing 5.15 meters (16'10¾") in a winning effort. The pair led their teammates to a pair of top-five finishes in those events, as senior Massimo Grisotto posted a season-opening 52.76-meter (173'1") throw to finish third in the discus and junior Tanner Woodring cleared 4.90 meters (16'0¾") to finish fourth in the pole vault.
Keefe and Bodine accounted for additional top-five finishes on Saturday, as Keefe placed third in the shot put (15.95m/52'4") and Bodine finished fourth in the 800-meter run (2:11.84). Overall, the men placed three in the top 10 of the 24-thrower shot put, as sophomore Trevin Jordan finished fifth with a throw of 15.72 meters (51'7") and junior Arden Jenkins placed 10th behind a throw of 14.54 meters (47'8½").
Elsewhere, a fifth-place finish from junior Jonah Hochstetler led Air Force to four of the top-10 finishes in a 1500-meter race that featured 75 competitors, while that same placement in the 800-meter run from sophomore Parker Hintz (1:50.90) saw the Falcons claim three of the top nine times. Freshman Chris Atunku finished third in the shot put (1.98m/6'6") and sophomore Cody Kelley placed fifth in the first 3000-meter steeplechase of the year (9:51.32), while a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (freshman Colton Manock, 54.84) and a 10th-place finish in the 400-meter dash (sophomore Christopher Johnson, 48.89) completed the men's list of event leaders.
Back on the women's side, under windy conditions, sophomore Ryan McFadden collected top-10 finishes in both the 100-meter (11.98, fourth) and 200-meter (24.94, seventh) races. Sarah Reynolds joined McFadden in the top 10 of the 200-meter finishes, as she clocked a wind-aided time of 24.94 to place eighth in the 40-sprinter field.
Air Force heads to California next week for training and competition during the Academy's spring break. The Falcons will spend the beginning of the trip in San Diego, before heading to Los Angelese for the Jim Bush Legends Meet on March 27-28 at UCLA.
