COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior goalie Alex Schilling made 29 saves to lead Air Force to a 2-1 win over Colorado College in an exhibition hockey game Saturday, Oct. 2, at the brand-new Robson Arena in Colorado Springs.
Colorado College struck first with a power-play goal just 1:17 into the game. After winning a faceoff in the offensive zone the Tigers created a flurry in front of Schilling. Logan Will's shot was covered up by Schilling. However, after video review, the officials decided that the puck crossed the goal line and the Tigers had a 1-0 lead.
Air Force tied the game early in the second period on the rush. Freshman Clayton Cosentino collected a puck at the blue line and fed Parker Brown skating with speed down the slot. Brown's first shot was saved, but he found the rebound and tucked it just across the goal line at 2:09. The Falcons took a 2-1 lead at 16:36 when Jacob Marti scored with a shot from the left point. His line mates on the all-Colorado Line, Austin Schwartz and Ty Pochipinski, had the assists. With 1:49 left in the period, it looked like the Falcons had a 3-1 lead as Will Gavin redirected a point shot by Andrew Kruse. After video review, the goal was disallowed due to contact in the crease.
The Falcons killed a penalty early in the third period and Schilling made 12 saves in the final period. The Tigers pulled the goalie with 2:50 remaining. In the extra-attacker situation, Schilling made four saves and the Falcons blocked five shots. With less than 10 seconds left, the Falcons attempted to clear a puck, but the Tigers kept it in and had a 2-on-0 in front of Schilling. The senior goalie made a save and then Luke Rowe blocked a shot at the buzzer to preserve the win.
Colorado College outshot Air Force, 30-25, in the game. Air Force was 0-for-1 on the power play while CC was 1-for-3. Air Force blocked 23 shots in the game.
"This did not feel like an exhibition game," head coach Frank Serratore said. "It got very hectic at the end, but you're never going to have a pretty win this early in the season. This was big for our young guys. This group plays with a lot of heart, spirit and effort. They have great chemistry. We only have one senior and he won the game for us. We blocked a lot of shots tonight and Schilling made some huge saves."
Air Force opens the regular season Oct. 8-9 with a non-conference series at Michigan State.
