Late Three Lifts Air Force Past Tulsa, 59-58

TULSA, Okla. - Air Force men's basketball (1-1) rallied to a 59-58 win at Tulsa (1-1) Saturday afternoon at the Reynolds Center. Junior Camden Vander Zwaag's three point basket with 21 seconds in regulation lifted the Falcons to its first win of the season.
Air Force was unable to hold a 30-25 halftime lead as Tulsa opened the second half with a 11-0 run and went ahead by 11 at 46-35 with under 10 minutes play. The Falcons fought back however, getting several clutch three's to keep the game close.
Air Force tied the game up at 56-56 with 1:52 to play on a dunk by Nikc Jackson. Tulsa went back up two on a basket by Darien Jackson with 1:32 to play. After several possessions, Air Force was able to get the ball back on a missed Tulsa shot. The Falcons then got the ball to Vander Zwaag, who calmly sank the game-winning three with 21 seconds left. Tulsa missed its final shot and Air Force hung on for the win.
Air Force had a balanced scoring attack as its three leading scorers had nine points each. All eight Falcons that played scored at least five points. AJ Walker, Jackson and Vander Zwaag led Air Force with nine points each. Jeffrey Mills added eight and Ethan Taylor and Joseph Octave chipped in with seven points each.
The Falcons shot 49 percent from the field and hit nine threes. Air Force held Tulsa to 37 percent shooting and out-rebounded the Golden Hurricane 34-27. Sam Griffin III led Tulsa with 21 points and Jeriah Horne added 15.
The Falcons led for much of the first half, withstanding a three-point barrage from Tulsa's Sam Griffin III to take a 30-25 halftime lead. Air Force jumped ahead 16-9 before Tulsa went on a 14-2 run to take a 23-18 lead with 5:25 in the first. Griffin knocked down three three's during the run.
The Falcons responded with a 12-2 run to close out the half, as Jeffrey Mills capped the run by knocking down a fadeaway jumper as the shot clock expired with three seconds left in the half.
Air Force returns to action Wednesday, Nov. 17, in its home-opener hosting Texas Southern. The game tips at 7 pm MT and will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
