WEST POINT, N.Y.- A fourth-quarter cold spell from the field proved to be too much for the Falcons to overcome, as Air Force sang first following a 73-62 loss at Army.
Riley Snyder was one of two Air Force players to finish in double-figures, managing a season-high 24 points. She finished the afternoon as the game's leading scorer. Snyder was 8-18 from the field, including 2-6 from three-point range. She also chipped in with three rebounds. Cierra Winters provided 10 points on a day where she finished 4-12 in her attempts, adding five rebounds to her end-of-game totals. Haley Jones recorded a team-high nine rebounds while shooting an efficient 4-5 from the painted area. Jones finished with nine points.
The Falcons entered Wednesday as one of the best teams in the country in forcing turnovers, and the same was true this afternoon. Air Force's defensive effort led to 28 Army turnovers, 18 of which came by way of a steal. However, the Falcons also surrendered possession 24 times while Army was the much more methodical team on offense. The Black Knights ended the day making 50% of their attempts (25-50), whereas the Falcons were unable to find a consistent attack, shooting 37% (24-65).
A slow first-quarter start saw the Falcons trail by 10 after the game's initial 10 minutes of play, but Air Force found its rhythm to start the second quarter. Highlighted by an 8-0 run to open the quarter, the Falcons outscored the Black Knights 23-12 to take a 32-31 lead into the halftime break.
The third quarter was very much a back-and-forth period, though the final 10 minutes seemed to be where the game turned against Falcons. With Air Force trailing 50-47 going into the last 10 minutes of play, Army proceeded to string together a 12-4 run over the first four and a half minutes, as the lead swelled to 62-51 with just over five minutes to go. The Falcons were able to cut the lead to as little as seven, but over the remaining 10 minutes of the final quarter, Chris Gobrecht's team connected on just five of 15 shot attempts, including three misses from behind the arc.
Next, Air Force will head down to Virginia to play Norfolk State on Saturday, November 27. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 pm MT.
