NORFOLK, Va.- After a frustrating loss at Army earlier this week, Air Force picked up a rejuvenating win over Norfolk State on Saturday, beating the Spartans 54-41.
It was a superstar kind of performance for Riley Snyder, who led all players with 25 points. She ended the day shooting 9-17 from the field, including 3-7 from behind the arc. She also managed five rebounds and two assists. Factoring in Saturday's performance, Snyder is now averaging 17.8 PPG, including 22.3 PPG over her last three games.
Jo Huntimer, making her first career start for Air Force, rewarded head coach Chris Gobrecht with a Renaissance-like showing. Huntimer did a little bit of everything, making all three of her shot attempts which led to her six points. The freshman also snatched six rebounds and was credited for two assists in her 29 minutes. Haley Jones reset her career-high with 14 rebounds, 10 of which came on the offensive end for the Falcons.
On the subject of rebounds, an undersized Air Force team emphatically won the margin on the boards, managing 41 rebounds to the Norfolk State's 29. As a result, the Falcons outscored the Spartans 20-8 in second-chance points.
The Falcons offense was also more consistent in its shot-taking and creating, as Air Force ended the afternoon having shot 40% from the field. That 40% threshold has been the deciding plateau for the Falcons thus far in 2021, considering Air Force has won all three games in which the team has finished with at least a 40% shooting percentage from the field.
A contested game early, Air Force led Norfolk State 16-14 after the first quarter, and eventually 26-24 at the halftime break.
A better team coming out of the locker room, the Falcons were exactly that on Saturday. Coach Gobrecht's team began the second-half on a 14-7 run, with Snyder accounting for nine of the 14 points over that stretch.
The Air Force defense came into Saturday ranked sixth in the country in terms of steals per game. Though the Falcons recorded only seven steals against Norfolk State, the constant pressure on the ball forced the Spartans to shoot just 25.9%, including 2-15 in the final quarter. The Falcons lead grew to as much as 20 with just under two minutes remaining.
Next, Air Force returns home on Thursday, December 2 to play Regis University at Clune Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 pm MT.
