
Air Force Can’t Hold Off UNLV In 69-64 Setback

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Air Force men's basketball (4-14, 2-12 MW) dropped a 69-64 Mountain West contest at UNLV (8-9, 5-5 MW) Monday night at Thomas & Mack Center. Junior guard AJ Walker led the Falcons with 20 points and sophomore forward Nikc Jackson added 18.
Air Force led for much of the game, but UNLV overtook the Falcons late. Air Force led by six at the half 34-28 after shooting 57 percent from the field. The Falcons got up by seven early in the second before UNLV started to make its run.
The Rebels took its first lead at the 10:33 mark before the Falcons wrestled the lead back by one with 8:55 to play. An 8-0 run then put UNLV up by seven with six minutes to play. The Falcons got the game with four points several times, but were unable to get any closer.
Guard David Jenkins came off the bench to score a game-high 26 points, with 20 coming in the second half. Jenkins did his damage from deep, shooting 6 of 8 from three-point range. Guard Bryce Hamilton added 14 points.
Walker led the Falcons in scoring for the second straight game, shooting 7 of 11 from the field. Walker also blocked a shot and had a game-high four assists. Jackson reached 18 points despite playing just 18 minutes. He made a career-high three three's and shot 7 of 12 from the field.
Senior forward Ameka Akaya scored eight points and senior forward Keaton Van Soelen led the Falcon reserves with sevenoints. Both led the team with four rebounds. Akaya also had two steals.
Sophomore Carter Murphy made his season debut, playing seven minutes. Sophomore Camden Vander Zwaag added his first-career three and blocked shot.
The Falcons shot 50 percent from the field and 43 percent from three-point range.
Air Force returns to action Thursday, Feb. 11, hosting Fresno State. Tip time is 7 pm and will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
