Air Force Wraps Up Day at Spank Blasing Invite

Three Falcons finished within the top 10 of the 61-runner men's 1500-meter field.
PUEBLO, Colo. – Several members of the Air Force track and field team opened their outdoor season today (March 27) at the Spank Blasing Invitational in Pueblo. Backed by a strong contingent of runners in the 1500-meter run, the Falcons competed in six different events at the Neta and Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl.
Freshman Luke Combs claimed a top-five placement in his first outdoor race, as he recorded a time of 3:55.69 to finish fourth out of 61 total runners in the 1500-meter run. He was joined in the top 10 by the Maison brothers (sophomore Scott, freshman Sean), who finished sixth (3:57.59) and 10th (3:59.42), respectively. In all, 11 Falcons finished within the top half of the men's field, including four within the top 20 – freshman Nick Scheller (17th, 4:01.22), senior Konrad Steck (18th, 4:01.61), senior Colin Dwyer (19th, 4:01.87), senior Drew Lester (20th, career-best 4:02.06) – and four within the top 30 – freshman Ryan Child (21st, 4:02.38), junior Joseph Wittig (22nd, career-best 4:02.39), freshman Jett Knight (24th, 4:03.01), sophomore Ben Bi (30th, 4:05.69).
Highlighted by a 17th-place finish from Rebecca Wusinich, three freshmen finished within the top half of the 55-runner field for the women's race at that distance. Wusinich clocked a time of 4:47.76 in her first collegiate outdoor race, while classmates Rachel Crytser and Rayna Fruchey placed 20th (4:50.29) and 24th (4:52.80), respectively, in their outdoor debuts.
The Falcons also placed two within the top half of their respective fields in the 800-meter distance. Sophomore Stephanie Gregersen clocked an outdoor debut of 2:18.46 to finish 12th out of 29 runners in the women's race, while freshman Aiden McLaughlin posted a time of 1:58.97 in his collegiate debut (indoor or outdoor) to finish 17th in the 28-runner men's field. Junior Adrianna Wilder clocked a top-10 time of 19:17.08 in her first outdoor 5000-meter run to finish 10th in the 21-runner field.
In the only field event contested by Air Force today at the ThunderBowl, junior Calvin Ciganik posted a clearance of 14'9½" to finish fourth in the pole vault.
The Falcons return to action next week, as they split for meets at Stanford (April 2-3) and Baylor (April 3).
