Duo Opens Action at Jim Click Decathlon

TUCSON, Ariz. – Air Force junior Wyatt Murphy and senior Tyler Gurchiek combined for eight career-best marks today (April 8) during the first five events of the Jim Click Decathlon in Tucson. The pair are listed third and 11th, respectively, after the opening day of competition at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.

Murphy, who sits third in the 16-athlete decathlon with 3866 points, bookended his day with a pair of meet-leading performances. The junior opened Thursday's action a winning time of 10.80 in the 100-meter dash and concluded action with career-best 48.15 in the 400-meter dash – a time that bettered the rest of the field by 0.63 seconds. In between, Murphy tallied career-best distances in the long jump (23'3¼") and shot put (33'7¼"), while adding a 6'3¼" clearance in the high jump.

Backed by career-best marks in every event, Gurchiek amassed 3471 points (11th) during the first day of action. Competing in his first decathlon since the 2019 JCD, the senior earned his highest placements in the two running events, as he deleted more than 0.25 seconds off both times to finish seventh in the 100-meter (11.30) and 400-meter (50.49) events. Gurchiek added more than five feet to his distance in the shot put (36'0"), while improving his long jump by more than two feet (20'11¼") and adding more than two inches to his outdoor-best clearance in the high jump (6'0¾").

Murphy and Gurchiek return to Drachman Stadium tomorrow (April 9) morning, for the final five events of the Jim Click Decathlon, which is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m. (MST). The rest of the squad kicks off action at the Colorado Invitational in Boulder with a handful of field events at 10:00 a.m. (MDT).
