Wyatt Murphy Debuts on Decathlon Standings

TUCSON, Ariz. – Backed by a career-best 6810-point total at the Jim Click Decathlon, Air Force junior Wyatt Murphy debuted in eighth on the Academy's all-time standings for the 10-event outdoor competition. Murphy finished fifth overall in the two-day meet, which concluded this afternoon (April 9) at Drachman Stadium in Tucson, while senior Tyler Gurchiek posted a personal-best 6395-point score to finish 11th.

Bolstered by a pair of career-best marks, Murphy added more than 300 points to his decathlon total to jump into the top-10 of the Academy's all-time standings. The junior, who opened the day with a 15.35 in the 110-meter hurdles, added more than seven feet to his personal distance in the discus throw (119'3") and surpassed his previous pole vault clearance by nearly two feet (13'1½"). Murphy added a throw of 118'0" in the javelin and a 1500-meter time of 5:02.74 to his marks during the final day of action.

Gurchiek, who improved his decathlon score by nearly 400 points, accounted for personal-best marks in the throwing events (103'1" in the discus; 105'9" in the javelin) and a season-best clearance in the pole vault (14'5¼"). He also clocked a time of 15.97 in the 110-meter hurdles and crossed the finish line of the 1500-meter run in a time of 4:47.57.

While Murphy and Gurchiek travel back from Arizona, members of the Air Force track and field team head to Boulder tomorrow (April 10) for the final day of action at the Colorado Invitational.
