FORT COLLINS, Colo.- Nearly 14 years to the day Air Force last defeated Colorado State at Moby Arena in 2008, the Falcons, led by a pair of freshmen guards, cruised past the Rams in tonight's 77-52 win.
Five Falcons finished in double-figures, with freshmen Lauren McDonald leading all players with a career-high 15 points. The majority of McDonald's scoring prowess came from behind the arc, where she made all four of her three-point attempts. She found ways to impact the game in other areas as well, snagging seven boards and three assists, with her rebounding total also marking a new personal best.
Fellow C4C Jo Huntimer also put together a breakout evening, rewriting her career-high in points with 14. Huntimer was efficient on the offensive end, going 6-9 from the field including 2-5 from three-point range. Like McDonald, Huntimer was opportunistic, grabbing six rebounds to go with her three assists.
Making her second start of the season, Kamri Heath turned in 12 points in 33 minutes, while Riley Snyder and Cierra Winters added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Thursday marked the 100th appearance of Snyder's Air Force career, and is now only seven starting appearances away from the century mark as well.
Haley Jones again scrapped underneath the rim, managing a game-high 11 rebounds. Tonight's win becomes the fifth game this season Jones has recorded 10+ rebounds.
Colorado State entered the evening surrendering the fewest turnovers in the country with an average of 10.2 per contest, while Air Force ranked 16th in the nation in turnovers forced at 22.1 per game. The Falcons lived up to the task, forcing 14 turnovers compared to just seven of their own to tie a season-low.
The Falcons' perimeter defense has maintained all season, and so was true on Thursday. Air Force's 27% opponent three-point percentage was best in the Mountain West before tonight's tip-off, and that figure will certainly lower, as the Falcons forced the Rams into only four made three's on 19 attempts.
Air Force set the tone early, carrying a 16-11 lead into the second quarter of play, a lead that eventually became 34-23 at halftime.
The third quarter saw the game shift in favor of the Falcons, as Chris Gobrecht's team went 10-19 from the field. Air Force managed a 16-5 run in the middle of the quarter to stretch its lead to as much as 19.
Even as the Rams pressed the action, the Falcons went shot-for-shot with the home side, building a lead as large 26 points before the final whistle.
Next, Air Force will stay on the road, crossing the northern Colorado border to play the Wyoming Cowgirls on Saturday, January 15. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm MT.
