USAFA, Colo.- The Falcons jumped over their first hurdle towards the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, defeating Navy 13-10 at Falcon Stadium.
Quarterback Haaziq Daniels finished the afternoon 6-8 for 156 yards passing and a touchdown. Daniels also accounted for 65 rushing yards on 14 carries.
Brad Roberts churned out 108 yards on 23 carries, while John Lee Eldridge III totaled 29 yards on seven rushing attempts.
David Cormier had a career-best day, hauling in three catches for 120 yards and a touchdown. Ben Jefferson, Brandon Engel, and Eldridge III each caught a pass as well.
Kicker Matthew Dapore made both of his field goal attempts, splitting the uprights from 23 and 22 yards. Dapore had made 12 of his last 13 kicks.
Linebacker Alec Mock recorded a game-, and career-high 13 tackles, as the Falcons managed a combined nine tackles for loss. TD Blackmon picked up his second-career sack in the second quarter, forcing one of Navy's six punts. The Falcon defense held the Midshipmen to 4-for-13 on third down conversions in addition to just 243 total yards.
The Air Force offense opened the game in style, as Daniels found a streaking Cormier on the third play of the game for a 67-yard touchdown strike to give the Falcons an initial 7-0 lead.
After the defense forced a three-and-out on Navy's ensuing possession, the Falcons concocted a nine-play, 52-yard drive that ended with a Dapore make from 23-yards out. Air Force extended its lead to 10-0 in the first quarter.
The needle of the game seemed to be moving in Air Force's favor, though a seven-play, 51-yard drive was ended at Navy's 14 yard-line following a lost fumble.
The Midshipmen found the scoreboard just before halftime, as Daniels was sacked and stripped at the Air Force 31 with 34 seconds remaining in the first half. The turnover allowed for a Navy field goal, as Air Force led 10-3 at the break.
After neither team scored in the third quarter, Navy found the endzone with 10:50 remaining in the final quarter. On third and goal, Navy QB Tai Lavatai scrambled for a five-yard touchdown to tie the game 10-10.
In response, the Falcons constructed a vintage Air Force drive. Coach Calhoun saw his offense total 71 yards on 12 plays to burn over six and a half minutes off the clock. Dapore ended the possession with his second field goal of the afternoon, connecting from 22 yards out. Air Force regained a 13-10 lead with 4:14 remaining.
The Falcon defense, as it did all day, made plays when necessary. Air Force created a three and out following the Dapore field goal, giving the Falcons possession of the football with 3:49 left on the clock. A Roberts 24-yard carry and a Daniels 18-yard rush allowed for Air Force to kneel down and expire the remainder of the time.
Next, Air Force travels to Utah State on Saturday, October 8. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 pm MT.
