U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Sophomore Guy Blessing recorded his first career shutout as Air Force blanked Bentley, 2-0, in an Atlantic Hockey game Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena. The teams split the two-game series.
Blessing was tested early and forced to make a pair of huge saves. Bentley's Eric Linell blocked a shot and had a breakaway that was saved with seven minutes left. Then with 2:30 left and Air Force on the power play, Bentley's Lucas Vanroboys stole a puck behind the Falcon net. With Blessing also behind the net, Vanroboys tried to wrap the puck around, but Blessing dove in front, making a goal-saving stick save.
On that same power play, Will Gavin make a rink-wide pass to Luke Rowe in the left circle. Rowe's shot hit Willie Reim in the slot and Andrew DeCarlo put back the rebound with 1:22 left in the period.
In the third period, Gavin and Parker Brown drew penalties that gave Air Force a 5-on-3. Clayton Cosentino and Brandon Koch played catch on the perimeter. Rowe took a pass from Koch and scored with a wrister from the left circle at 12:28.
Air Force outshot Bentley, 42-25. Air Force was 2-for-6 on the power play while Bentley was 0-for-6. Blessing made 25 saves in his first career shutout. Bentley freshman Connor Hasley made 40 saves.
"I feel better about this one, but not about last night," head coach Frank Serratore said. "It gets exhausting to have our backs against the wall on a Saturday after a stinker on Friday. We have to figure it out on Friday nights. It is early in the year, but this was a must-win. This was a well-earned shutout for Blessing. They generated some quality chances, but Blessing was sharp as a tack. I'm proud of the boys for how they responded, but not over-joyed about the weekend."
Air Force hits the road for the next four games, starting with a pair of conference games at AIC, Nov. 19-20, in Springfield, Mass.
